Question about Chevrolet Impala

Car is not running hot and temp gauge works fine when you first start car and when you start it again temp gauge will try to go almost to 260 and car is not hot. changed temp sensor and thermostate and full a antifreze.you can turn key swicth on and off a couple of times and get they gauge back to 140 and the start car and temp hand sets perfect until you shut car off and restart it what could the problem be any help graetly excepted

195-210 F is the thermostat opening temp.

With 50/50 mix fresh coolant it can handle 230F without any problem.

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Sounds like the water pump is cavitating . Replace water pump. Check coolant level also. Open the bleeder valve usually located on thermostat housing to remove air from system. close valve when coolant is present while filling. close radiator cap and top off recovery bottle to correct level. These engines are prone to overheating, do not let temp gauge get in the red.

fans came late on those car,like 212 and second fan comes on at 224,you reprogram it to come a lot sooner,,other thing is there might be gunk inside the block,and coolant has hard time to pass through,and staying longer than enough in block temp goes high,even tough the radiator is doing it's job,it is just coming out block lot hotter than it suppose to be,and gauge read the block not the radiator

1996_gmc_sierra Heat gauge started going from 260 degrees back to normal. I replaced heat sensor then thermostat. This summer had complete radiator and cap put in. The gauge says its running at 230 an


My Mountaineer had a similar problem. When driving it, the temp needle would slowly go up and up for like 3 minutes then it would come down within about 30 seconds. Then it would slowly rise again. just kept doing this over and over but it never went too high. My gauge didn't have numbers on it but it would go up about half way (not near the too hot level though) then fall back down to about a quarter of the way on the gauge. Found out that the fan clutch was bad on my radiator fan. It was not engaging and disengaging at the right times. New fan clutch solved the problem and probably saved the engine from overheating eventually if it had gotten even worse.

What's chances that the temperature gauge or sender itself is wrong?
Is the heat exceptionally hot? What temperature is the heater dicharge when the gauge reads 260?
I think that the sender is not expensive, try that. An auto parts store could get you an inexpensive dial gauge that you might be able to install in place of the sender.

are you sure the cooling fans are working?
Is the coolant temp gauge telling the truth?
have you lifted the hood and heard the coolant bubbling into the overflow?
Or heard the tinging sound of a red hot engine?
If he did a liquid test with the dye,and it changed colors it should have changed very fast,
Another thing to think about if he was to take the fan belt off,and pull the thermostat housing off,and removed the thermostat,Now pour coolant into the thermostat hole to almost the top,Now start the car and see which side the bubbles come from,left or right,that will be the gasket that is leaking not both.

The temperature gauge on my 2002 grand prix dose


the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.

The only real way to answer your questions is for you to open the hood and look it over. Once it has cooled down, re-fill the cooling system (use water...it's cheaper and to do repair you will need to repalce it anyhow...Once full carefully look everything over to find where the leak is.Also make sure that the drivebelt is there. (from what you said, likely it is) If it's water pump, you will see coolant running out from under the pulley. Once you have looked everything over, if you have not found leak, start engine and close the cap...look again...as pressure builds, small leaks will become more obvious. If you don't find leak, remove the thermostat and change it.
After changing stat, if problem persists, it's likely that you have either a plugged radiator or an internal engine gasket problem. If you have any auxiliary electric cooling fans, make sure they are working and also check the fan clutch on the mechanical fan (it should not excessively freewheel when hot). Whole testing, any time you replace the radiator cap you must allow engine to cool down before removing it again. Watch temp gauge while testing...don't allow engine to overheat.

the sender for the gauge is on the cylinder head near the spark plug if you unplug it the gauge should stay all the way cold then ground it out it will go all the way hot if that reads like that replace the coolant sensor
