Question about 2000 Honda Accord

1 Answer

The dashboard on my Accord 2000 V6EX has been progressively getting darker. I know A couple of dials are lighted when the head lights are turned. I cannot see gas gage, rpm gage, speedometer. A couple of days ago there was a little hesitation and then the lights came on. A few years ago it got dark in the odometer area. Looks like it is a connection problem rather than a light bulb problem. My question is - How difficult is it to get to the wiring behind the dashboard? Is it easy to put things back together?

Yep. I have checked the dimmer control. It looks like few of the dashboard lights are not functioning. One light on the far right is still functioning. A few days ago I noticed the dashboard was dark when I started the car and turned the headlights on. After a few minutes of driving, some of the dashboard lights lit up and I could read most of the dials. For several years now, the light near the odometer has not come on. My clock ligh has been out for several years also. Other than these annoying lights the car has done great!

Have you checked the knob in the lower left portion of the instrument panel? Panel dimmer control? It can be overlooked.

You have to remove the instrument panel to replace bulbs, or to check the connectors. The procedure is:
If you have a tilt steering wheel, put it all the way down.
Remove the two screws at the top of the bezel, the pull the bezel outward to disengage the clips at the bottom (use something like a taped screwdriver so you won’t cause damage to the surrounding area).
Once the bezel is out, remove the instrument cluster screws and pull the cluster out and unplug the electrical connectors (there are three of them).
You can then check the bulbs and the connectors themselves, maybe clean the connectors up a bit, or replace bulbs, but sometimes it’s a matter of replacing the whole unit (not advisable to try to get inside it), sorry.
Hope this helps you a bit.

Oh, don't forget to disconnect the battery first (neg cable). If you have an anti-theft radio, make sure you have the code.

Chances are, your alternator is on its way out. I had a similar issue a couple years back where the battery light was coming on in winter at startup but would turn off after a couple of minutes of driving. I know it was not charging the battery when the light was on because my head lamps and dashboard lights were a little dimmer than normal. I decided to just put a new one in instead of possibly getting **** in the cold somewhere. If I remember correctly, the voltage regulator is built into the alternator. I was tinkering with idea of pulling it out and trying to fix it, but it's really not worth it. Now, if you don't notice your lights being a little bit dimmer when the battery light is on like I did, the issue could be your battery. It should have 13.5 volts on it. Or you can just take it in to some auto parts store to have it tested. They usually do that for free.

Your park light fuse is blown. It is in the fuse panel that's accessible with the passenger side door open (side of dashboard), labeled something like "license plate and small lights".

Dashboard light replacement

1) The clock slides out by carefully prying with a fine screw driver. Take care not to scratch the dashboard fascia. It has a mini light bulb in the back. take it to the dealer / parts shop so they can see the proper color. Accord dashboards came with 3 different color plastic covers on the bulbs. Also, when you take out the clock, you will be able to see the 3rd screw that is holding the a/c controls fascia.
