Try playing with shifter. move from park to low rapidly and push to park with some force. try this a few times. the shifter sends a signal to a lock actuator to allow your ignition to release key. if that doesnt work remove your steering wheel lower cover. usually acces 2-3 screws from underneath cover. u will see what looks like a gold pushbutton located near lock cylinder u may be able to get key released by manually actuating that solenoid

Same thing happened, took it to the dealership, who proclaimed "nothing wrong", and kept it for 5 days. (no charge, lucky me). Happened again, and my temper saved me - I hit the gearshift and voila, so...even though it read "P" for park, it was not all the way in park. Not a problem since. When it sticks, I push the shifter as far as it will go and it works, Thanks but no thanks, GM dealership!

The only thing that comes to mind is pop your hood and pull the spark plugs

How can I get key out which is stuck in ignition of 2008 cobalt. It also won't start

This can happen if the battery is low / dead. To solve, connect a set of jumper cables between the battery in the Cobalt and a running car's battery. Shut off the running car. In the Cobalt, make sure all accessories (lights, radio, fan, etc.) are off. Step on the brake, then move the gear shifter fully into the PARK position. Next, either attempt to start the engine, or turn the key to the OFF position and remove it from the ignition.

I hope this helps & good luck!

I have a 2008 chevy cobalt the key is stuck in the start and I cant turn it back in the off position

You need a new ignition switch lock cylinder. GM is extremely bad for these things going bad. There not all that expensive to replace.

Key is stuck in ignition and will not turn to off. Pulling battery cables off did not work , car continued to run. Tried pulling off center spark wire for cable car continued to run. Tried the release...

since it is stuck in the on position you should be able to change the ignition lock with the key in. it is not very expensive and fairly easy to do. you should be able to purchase at just about any auto parts store.

The vehicle will not turn off...key is stuck in ignition

If the car is manual, apply brake hard then let clutch out whilst in gear, this will stall the car, if the car is automatic, you will have to find the coil and remove the coil lead, this will be under the bonnet and you will have to use insulated pliers as you could get a shock, once the engine has stopped, disconnect the battery and contact a mechanic to get the ignition rectified. I assume you have tried wriggling the key in all positions and the car is in park. Goodluck.

2009 cobalt, key is in ignition, will turn to on position, will not start, will turn off but key will not come out of ignition. gear selector will not move.

theres many different terms for it but it sounds to me like your cobalt went into "theft mode" (emergency mode, panic mode, etc.) your best bet would be to call the dealer and ask them how to "reset" your car.
