Question about 2000 Ford Windstar

The gear shifter handle moves but the van stays in park . The gear shifter handle on the steering colum, will move up and down very loosely. The indicater for park, reverse, neutral, and drive will move to these positions when I move the shifter up and down. The best way to describe this is that the gear shifter handle on the steering colume feels like its broke off.

There is a cable attached to your transmission that is actuated with that lever. the cable has come disconected or has broken. open your hood and look for cable on top of your transmission to see if it is worn.broken ect. helps to have somebody move lever while u locate it if you are not sure what you are looking for.

This may be a simple mechanical repair as in a mechanic getting to the gearbox and adjusting the slack on the cable/rods, worst case it sounds also like the cable is stretched and needs repalcing, about 1 hours work maximum. Good luck

Gear shift stuck in park

there is a u shaped clip that holds handle on stem, pull that and then pull handle off and then push down on the white stick that is in center of shifter and see if it can move out of park then, also make sure your foot is on brake ! if that that does'nt work then there is a little solenoid down by shifter that has to move when you put foot on brake so's that it will let you shift it (safety device) it may be bad or bad connection.

F250 gear shift selector

check the trans shifter cable to see if it moved out of place and or remove the dash to check behind the gages to see if the cable that goes from the steering colum to the gages has been damaged or stuck!

Shift handle moves freely with out shifting trans

The shifter works off a shift cable which is connected to the transmission. The connection of this cable to the transmission is on the drivers side looking straight up were you can see it. The other end connects to the inner part of the shifting mechanisum where you shift
You can only get a replacement at any General Motos dealerships parts department

Car wont shift into gear. Gear shift moves but gears don't

It sounds like the lever from the gear shifter has come loose. I would first look at the shifter from under the car. You can also remove the boot (or console) from inside the car and check the linlage. Most linkage is held on by a small clip or cotter pin and somethime they don't stay in place anad the linkage slides off the arm..

2000 Durango ran fine, parked, satrated and it

well a number of things could be wrong with this, first check the fluid levels to insure that there is fluid in your transmision, next check to ensure that the shifting bar from the gear shifter is connected to the gear box controler, normally it is a bar that goes down by the steering colume, try getting a person in the driver seat and moving the gear seletor and make sure everything is moving that looks like it should, if a monting brace for this is broken it won't work

find the linkage under the dash. follow it from under the steering column and you should find a loose screw under there. To be on the safe side, make sure engine is off while you moving the shifter! Good Luck.
