Question about 1990 Nissan 300ZX
To being you will need to remove everything in front of the engine - including the fan, the serpentine belts, and the crankshaft pulley. The bolts for the water pump are located UNDER the timing cover, so getting these covers off are the only way to do it. You don't have to change the timing belt - but since you're in there, you might as well. BUT, if you dont understand the concept of timing marks, etc - dont touch the belt. Just leave it on there, especially if you dont have a ton of miles on the belt.
Once everything is removed and the bolts are clearly visible for the water pump, it's safe to say that you've made it to the top of the hill. You can now remove it and add the gasket/sealer and start buttoning everything back up.
When you remove the crankshaft pulley, be sure that you've checked a few forums with regards to setting the parking brake and putting the car in gear. I've read about it being done, but I didn't do it, myself. Maybe there is a reason why they did it this way, so check ALL OPTIONS before you begin your repair. There's more than one way to skin a cat, so I'm just telling you ohw I did it - not necessarily the only way to do it.
Give yourself about 5 to 6 hours to do this. Feel free to take breaks and just no rush yourself. Let's give you 7hrs, just to relieve a little pressure off of you!
