Question about 1983 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

My question is this I have a 1983 toyota pickup truck with the 22R engine.About a week ago I pulled out ot my drive way and when the motor warm up it started to run rough and black soot was coming from my exhaust. So I checked my air filter and gas filter and they where all right. So I decided to rebuilt the carb, and when I started the engine and it ran okay until it warmed up and started to run rough and black soot started coming from the exhaust. So rebuilting the carb did not make any difference. What else could I look at that might be causing this problem. The truck ran fine and all of sudden started to do this

Black soot is a running rich condition it's getting to much gas not enough air .. 14-1 ratio air to gas your carb rebuild needs to be rechecked for sticking float..

Gas will not flow easily (sometimes hardly at all) into my 1983 Toyota pickup. Is the line clogged? Is there a seperate connection that allows air to escape during filling which could be clogged?

check your fuel pump pressure and I'm sure you changed your fuel filter. Blow compressed air back through fuel line as it may be something floating in tank. Does flow change when gas cap is off? Is this 20 or 22R motor?

Engine trouble with my 1983 toyota pickup

Toyota engines have a built in TSTV- thermo controlled vacuum system where vacuum is applied to the choke system in various levels as according to the temp. of the engine. If the TSTV is faulty or if the vacuum pipes are incorrectly placed then you have a choke which is not opening up properly. Fuel is thus not burnt completely and due to the incomplete combustion there is a formation of soot on your exhaust. Try to get the choke to open up in relation to the temp of the engine. The fuel/air ratio alse needs to be checked ( idle mixture control) once you have the vacuum system working properly.

Oil in the radiator on a 90 Toyota with a 22R engine. What is blown, a head gasket or timing cover has a hole in it?

timing cover is warn through I bet the guides are broken and it makes a knocking sound! most common problem. You will need a timing kit and a cover.
