After starting engine and applying brake the gear shifter leaver will not engage drive unlock gearshift locked in park

There is usually a manual override button/hole located near the shifter that will allow you to release the shifter to allow use until you can get the unlock mechanism repaired.

I have a 98 land rovor will not go in to gear ?

it won\'t go into gear as in the shifter does not come out of "park"? or vehicle will not move when placed in "reverse" or "drive"? if its not coming out of "park" you may either have a faulty brake switch or shifter lock solenoid is stuck. on certain european automobiles i have come across the shifter stays locked because the internal solenoid in the shifter assembly has gone bad and the entire shifter ass\'y would need to be replaced. this is the worst case scenario. majority of the time its a bad brake light switch not sending the signal to the shift interlock to release the solenoid within the shifter.

now if your vehicle is failing to move while in "reverse" or "drive" you have some sort of internal failure with the trans. it can be something as simple as a shift solenoid or major such as broken planetary gear.

Gear shift unlock

Dodge had a problem in the column and actually had a recall on certain vehicles. I pulled out the rubber boot around the shifter and saw a pin that appeared to be the problem. I sprayed it with lubricant that is harmless to plastics, worked it a few times, and 2 years later it is still working .

Locked Ignition but steering wheel free

Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.

1998 dodge ram 4x4 transmission problems

You will need to get the transmission rebuilt. With the info that you have provided the direct clutches are welded together. Becareful about getting it rebuilt, most shops see Dodge transmissions and they see dollar signs. You should be able to get it rebuilt for around $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on amount of damaged hard parts. Thanks and good luck with your repair.
