If your truck has the 4.6 or 5.4 V8 then you know it has two timing chains. The lifters could be causing the knocking noise. If it sounds like it's coming from the top then I would suspect lifters. If it sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine then I would suspect main or rod bearings.
It could be rod knock: if so, plan on an engine change/rebuild. On my 97 F 250, 5W motor oil is recommended,so you can't put in heavier oil. But that's not a solution. Something mechanical is askew.
Is it making creaking sounds, or knocking wrapping sounds from the
engine? Is it only while you are driving, turning, or idling? Need to
know in order to help.
sounds more like a ujoint or a center support for the drive shaft. also check and make sure that the flywheel bolts have not come loose. also check the harmonic balancer and make sure it is not seperating
this is a guess but the inner tie rod and tie rod end (you have one of each on each side of the truck), wear out and make a loud clunk, mostly when changing direction, but also on starting & stopping. ABout a $200 repair including a front end alignment.
Call at least 3 shops for an estimate including your Ford dealer.
But first try the rest button located in the drivers
rear qtr panel. Remove the jack access panel and you'll see it up
front. It's black with a white button on the bottom. With car running, press reset.
When you rebuild the motor, don't cut the brown wire. Disassamble the
connector and the pin slides out the back.
