Question about Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

92 olds ciera, when slowing to a stop, car shudders and stalls. (fine if thrown into nuetral while slowing.) nuetral to drive needs to be brake-torqued, otherwise stalls

Thank you for helping me out. I thought it was something with the torque converter...anyways the car is on its last leg; has 192k on it and i dont drive it very far when i do. So do you think Lucas Stop Slip, or a product for TC "Shudder" would work as a temporary fix?

Hello jgosc.
I suspect from what you are describing is a problem in your transmission. Usually is worse after the transmission gets warmed up.
Your vehicle has a feature in the transmission that locks up the torque converter when cruising to save fuel. There is a solenoid mounted behind the left side cover on your transmission that sticks and doesn't allow the lockup to release and will stall the motor. If you are familiar with driving a manual transmission it would be like not depressing the clutch coming to a stop.
The part should be available at your local auto supplier, dealer or transmission shop.
If you are a do-it-yourself person the side cover will need to be removed. There are about a dozen bolts to come off and you may need to pry the engine and trans a little for clearance.
A cup or so of fluid will run out on removal. There are two wires, usually black and red and will need to be cut as there isn't a connector plug. The replacement part wiring should be coded similarly. The ones I get also come with easy twist connectors to hook the wires together again.
I hope this solves your problem.
Thank you for using Fixya!

    Hello again.
As much as I would like to say an additive would help I really doubt so.
But I am not a big advocate of many additives either. So there may be a product that could help, just that I haven't tried one that does.
Hope you find a cure for your problem.
    Take care.

What makes the fuel pump not kick on on a 92 Oldsmobile Cutlass

There is a red wire close to the battery in the front. It's not connected to anything. Apply positive voltage and that will run your pump for testing purposes.

Car running rough at random when accelerating and also idle drops suddenly when slowing down and often completely stalls out when I stop. Smells strongly of gasoline when it stalls/almost stalls but I

This could be a lot of things. one of the tests that you need to run is shift it into nuetral when you are stopping and see if it still drops RPM and wants to stall. This will eliminate or conclude that it is a transmission issue. If it is still doing this then it could be a vacuum leak or fuel delivery issue.

Will quit when comes to stop unless drop in nuetral and keep gas revving and drop into drive and go fast

Manual or automatic trans? If it's automatic, does it shudder when coming to a stop, before it stalls? If this is happening, replace the torque converter clutch solenoid in the transmission. It's sticking closed. This is just a guess since of the lack of info.

When slowing down, everything is fine, until its almost time to fully stop, then the car acts like it is going to die. if I put the car in nuetral, then stop, its fine, it only does this in drive and at a...

Are there codes in the transmission computer? Likely the torque converter clutch is not disengaging or a holding member with the transmission could not be releasing. this could be caused by a faulty shift solenoid or a mechanical failure with the transmission. Check to ensure the transmission shift properly under all conditions. Also, stall test the torque converter, put it in gear hold the brakes firm and throttle the engine. Generally the torque converter will stall out around or above 2,000 rpm. If it stalls out much lower, check the torque converter clutch solenoid for proper operation.

Again, check the transmission computer for codes. You will need an advanced OBD1 scan tool which can communicate like a hikock scan tool ( ford factory for that era)
