Question about 2002 Ford Taurus
If you look at where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine there will be a rounded cap looking housing (known as a thermostat bell housing) that is held on with two bolts. If when you remove this housing you have not drained the radiator, coolant will flow from it so be sure to have a pan under the engine to catch the overflow. (Just remember that cats love the smell of antifreeze but it will kill them if they drink it so make sure to clean up any overflow.) You will have to place a stiff putty knife under the housing to break it loose from the mount. Pay attention to the position of the old thermostat so you can install the new one in the same position. Clean all mounting surfaces, coat the new gasket with a thin coating of high temperature rtv silicone, place the new thermostat in the recess on the engine side of the opening, install the gasket then install the bell cover making sure the thermostat does not move from it's resting place. If the thermostat moves and you tighten the bell cover, the cover will break. The rest of the assembly process is to refill the radiator and then check for leaks after the engine is warmed up.
