You can try to put the car on ramps or a hill & pull off the radiator top hose & fill it with coolant with the heater running wide open. it sounds like an air pocket

1996 BMW z3 1.9 just blew top hose off radiator.no previous overheating problems. Could it be stuck thermostat?

Hoses wear out , replace it . That hose is under a lot of pressure and heat and everything wears out and has a life. I would say that was a helluva hose to last that long and would suggest you look at all your hoses and belts especially if they have never been replaced.

My 97 BMW z3 is overheating and I have replaced the heater core hoses but it is still running hot

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. The most common issue to overheating is a stuck thermostat or a bad one. Next, would be the water pump. You could need a new coolant cap, which only cost a few bucks. You want to make sure that your fans are kicking on correctly. If they are not, check the fuses. If the fuses are good, you may have a bad fan or a bad wire. Make sure there is no coolant leaking. Sometimes, coolant can leak into the oil and is not easily visible to the eye. You may want to check your radiator also. It is possible that you have a bad coolant sensor as well. If your check engine light is on, you should take it to Autozone or Advanced and have it scanned. They do this for free and it might lead to what is causing your car to overheat. I hope this helps you.

It doesn't sound like that, could be heater controls, heater core, blockage in the coolant passages or even the thermostat. Thats the cheapest solution, but if the thermostat is bad your car would not circulate coolant and would be overheating, it could be intermittantly opening too.. But they are not hard to replace if you can get to it..

You may have a starter or ignition switch issue. I would guess starter with just the information you are giving. Of course with electrical problems proper testing needs to be done to condemn expensive parts such as a starter.

hi jasso, I would recommend checking the water pump if you see no flow in the radiator. Make sure when you fill up the cooling system, that you fill it cold, and that the vent screw in the radiator is loose. fill system until fluid comes out the vent screw. tighten the screw, start the car and have someone run at 1500rpm and check for flow.also, make sure that you have your temp setting full hot and blower on middle speed so that you don't trap air in the heater core.
