There are a couple of ways to figure out which is making the noise.1st, you could remove the serpentine belt (to change either component will require that anyway), and spin the tension pulley and the alternator pulley to see which one is on the way out. If it is making all that noise, it should be easy to determine. If one is difficult to turn, it would indicate it was the problem.2nd to figure out which one is noisy w/out removing the belt, use a large screwdriver or piece of wood (1" wide and 16" or so long). With the car running, VERY CAREFULLY place the tip of the screwdriver (or end of the board) on the alternator, with the handle of the screwdriver (or end of the board) enclosed in your hand, gently place your ear against your hand, you will be able to hear the bearings, and should be able to determine which is making the noise. This can be dangerous, as the moving parts and belts can make contact w/ the screwdriver or wood, so I would recommend the 1st method. Good luck.

There are a few things you can do to check this ,it sounds like a bearing from the alternator . it is behind the pully ,or the bearing on the tensioner .you can take the serpentine belt of the alternator by usint a pry bar or a ratchet on the belt tensioner .you can check both by spinning them when ther is no pressure on them the one that makes the same noise sound is the bad one ,there is a diagram on the front hood on how to remove and replace the serpiene belt

GRAGLE,n- the most descriptive word I've never heard before.!
Check the AC compressor pulley. The noise should stop when AC is on MAX.When AC is off, compressor pulley still spins, and as they wear they can rattle [gragle] against the compressor clutch, when the electro-magnet isn't engaged. If AC doesn't work, spray a light lubricant [WD40,CRC,etc.]on pulley clutch to pin-point noise.

My 1998 Caravan has a bad squeek in the belt system. Have replaced tensioner pully twice, replaced idler pully and bearings, replaced cerpentine belt twice, replaced alternator twice, went back to...

Without the belt do all the pulleys turn easy. Power steering, water pump, alternator, and tensioner pulley. There is probably only one way the belt will stay on but make sure you have the smooth side to the smooth pulley and the grooved side to the grooved pulleys. See if any of the pulleys have and wiggle in them.

When I turn my van on it squeals very loudly and it gets worse when you press the gas. What could it be?

You could have a bad or worn serpintine belt. When you replace it make sure all the pulleys are rotating freelyi.e. air compressor, alternator, tensioner idler & power steering pullies to make sure all of their bearings are running freely. Good luck!

2006 Dodge Gr. Caravan. Loud humming noise upon

Misalignment of the belt, incorrect belt, worn or loose tensioner, Too tight of an adjustment (many service centers do this on purpose so when the belt breaks in it becomes properly adjusted, I do not believe in this philosophy), The belt is actually one long belt called a serpentine belt.....

I have a rattling sound up towards my belts. kinda sonds like a ceased barring. near my alternator

The best way to find the noise is to remove the belt
and check each pully by hand. If a pully locks up it
will make more of a screeching sound. A rattle sound makes me think your idler pully is loose.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Why does my dodge grand garavan make loud noise

could be a problem with your flywheel or if the starter was just replaced and you started hearing the noise then it could have to be shimmed out from the flywheel. Could be a starter issue.

Belt came off 2001 dodge caravan how do you release tension

there is a tension pully on the top of the left side that the belt has to go under. put an open-end box wrench (15mm, i believe) on the bolt for the pully and pull it towards you. it's spring loaded, so be careful that the wrench doesn't slip. as you pull it with your right hand, tuck the belt under it with your left (after, of course, it's around all of the other pullys). let the tension pully loose slowly, and there you go!

There is a tension pully located under the alternator. It has a bolt head in the middle of it. Place a long box end wrench on it and pull it towards you. The tensioner will move forward. first put the belt on the pullies properly. (see diagram placed at left side of the hood release). Then leave the belt off the pully that is located just under the motor mount. Pull back on the wrench that is placed on the tensioner as you at the same time place the belt onto the pully under the motor mount. Done. Remember that the tentioner may need to be replaced also. It might be a good idea to do that since that is the usual reason the belts jump off. Just a couple bolts with that and done. It is not expensive.
