I'd expect to pay anywhere from 8-12 hours of labor. A head gasket is a tremendously time-consuming job and takes a lot of work. You'll also be paying for other parts (intake and exhaust manifold gaskets have to be replaced, new coolant, new oil since both are drained before the job starts), and if you're doing a water pump, bite the bullet and do the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, accessory belt(s), and thermostat as well - those are normally done with the water pump and there's no sense in paying the labor twice.

Cost to replace valves on the 1993 olds achieva 4 cyl engine

If you take the head off and take it to an automotive machine shop for the valve work, pressure testing, inspection, and cleaning (by hot tank), you are looking at about 200-300 dollars, depending on locale and shop prices. Then you could buy the gasket set for about $75 and put it all back together. Know what you are doing and buy a repair manual to follow procedures. If it is a timing belt and not a timing chain, go with a new belt-not very expensive, under $25- and good insurance to also put in a new water pump.

If you have a shop do all the work, it will get expensive fast. Most head jobs cost a minimum of about $750. And most shops will send the head to a machine shop for that work involved, so add that to the cost.

I have water gitting into the cylender head of my 1998 jeep cherokee. i replace all the gaskets but its still leaking. what could cause this?

If you replaced the cylinder head gasket it could be a cracked block or head. If you didn't replace the head gasket it could be blown. It could also be a warped head, especially if it's magnesium alloy. If only a small amount is getting into the head, you might want to try radiator sealant. In the old days we used to pour in a raw egg in the radiator while the engine is running. Most times it would stop the leak for a few weeks.

How would i know if my overheating problem in my 97 Geo Metro Prizm is a radiator, water pump, blown head gasket, cracked head or a thermostat problem. is there some way i can check for this?

Oil and coolant mixed usually means the engine is damaged.
Blown head gasket, or cracked block - head.
You may have coolant in the engine oil too.
I would not drive it.

I would like to have instructions on how to change the water pump in a 1994 oldsmobile achieva

only advice i can give is when you replace it with the new one .take the time to make sure where t bolts to the block where the gasket sits get that very perfectly clean.people leave little bits of old gasket on and have to redo the entire job .

Water appears to be leaking from behind the water pump. Could this be a gasket? Compression tests are showing no leaks or cracks in the aluminum block.

Compression Test -- isn't for cracked heads or blocks or
even a head gasket, depending on what is taking place

I would remove what is necessary to get a closer look
You may be there a few days,as I would expect a bad
water pump or a gasket

Your going to do the pump anyway, as well as a timing belt
hoses etc,once your in there

So you may want that done by a repair shop
Timing belt may have to come off to get to water
pump
Not a job for you, if you never did one before

LOCATION OF AIR CONDITION COMPRESSOR IN 97 OLDS ACHIEVA

The compressor is located on the engine with a belt driving it, It is usually down the bottom where you can't get to it, most of them are removed from underneath. You have 3 or 4 things that are belt driven, in case you don't know which is which, the power steering pump, the alternator, and the ac compressor, and sometimes you will find an air pump, or a water pump. The ac compressor is easily identified by the 2 big aluminum pipes going into it. Hope this helps.

I have a problem with a 2000 Ford F250. have changed thermostat, water pump and radiator. truck does not overheat, but will force water back out through the reservoir. is it a intake maniford or head...

You have a blown gasket.
You will have to repair it with a new gasket.
First try a quick fix like a Stop Leak for head gasket Bars Leaks or similar heavy duty.

97 Nisson pickup smoking white smoke (a lot)

this indicates that you have a blown head gasket. you may not have water in the oil pan but it's because the water is not leaking into your oil galleys, but instead leaking into the cylinders and being burned hence the white smoke.. there is a big myth that you will get water in the oil with a blown head gasket . there might be trace amounts but the only time you get water in the oil is if the heads crack or the block cracks othere wise most times it's just getting burnt in the cylinders, hence the great amount of white smoke. please rate this thanks.
