It is located on the transmission side that faces the front of the car. It's just left and below the transmission spin on filter. It's the same sensor for the Engine Coolant Temp sensor and the Intake Air Temp sensor.

The engine coolant temperature sensor is mounted in a coolant passage located in the cylinder head.

Transmission problems

I have a 97 SL2 and it has the typical slam into reverse, but also after a couple minutes of driving it downshifts... It stays there for like 3-5 minutes then runs fine afterwards... What is the problem?

Cant find temp sensor on 1992 saturn sl2 need to change

On the SL2 (DOHC), there are two coolant temperature sensors located on the left-hand side of the cylinder head, near the upper coolant hose. On the SL2, the upper sensor with ONE WIRE controls the temperature gauge in the dash. The lower sensor with TWO wires provides input to the computer. They are not interchangeable. Here is a tip you will need a 14mm deep socket or box wrench. The new sensor may require a 13mm socket or wrench, depending on the manufacturer. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted.

I have a 1997 saturn sl2 and my service engine soon light is on. I got it scanned and the guy said that two codes came up one was a misfire where I need the spark plugs and wiring fixed. the other code was...

forget the plugs and wires
that is a mechanic scam
the more likely misfire is from dirty fuel and bad injectors and low fuel pressures
just use a couple of cans of quality injector cleaner first
Plugs in modern electronic controlled engines can last the entire life of the engine or more than 10 years if left alone
again take it to an accredited transmission specialist shop for a better diagnosis and quote or you could wind up being told that you need a new transmission
