Question about 2002 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

I have a 2002 rav4L. On initial startup I get cloud of unburned gas from the exhaust. Its not oil or water. A tune-up, wire & plug replacement, and all 02 & fuel air ration sensors have been replaced previously. Fuel system cleaning was accomplished per the dealer. This problem is intermittent and the idle does increase when cold and when the steering wheel is turned. The idle will not increase if the ac is turned on. No fault codes and the dealer has checked the coolant temp sensor, idle air control valve, and the entire system, nothing found. Any advise?

The Rav 4s have 2 issues firstly the injectors can leak and this causes a strong fuel smell on start up,even cleaning wont fix it they need to be replaced, and secondly valve stem seals go in them meaning on cold start up it will blow smoke for a few seconds, these are the 2 most common issues as i work for Toyota and see plenty of them

97 CAVALIER Z-24 UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR GETS SO HOT IT SMOKES YET THE ENGINE DOESNT GET HOTALSO IT IS MISS FIRING

Everytime it missfires the unburned fuel will be burned in the catalytic converter. Hopefully you can get it tuned up before the cat. conv. is ruined. Plugs, wires, coils etc. While the plugs are out run a compression test . Look at plugs for oil fouling at that age valve stem seals sure could be an issue and feeding oil into the exhaust system fire you have going on.

Had a smog test done got a P0402 code. And had a very bad tune-up changed spark plugs wires filter oil change, plugs stuck, oil was black, could that be the cause of the P0402 code, exhaustive gas flow

Sounds like my 2002 nissan pathfinder is bogging down when i gas it , it runs fine but gets crappy gas miledge

needs a tuneup, definately change fuel & air filters, replace spark plugs & wires, distributor cap / rotor, change oil & filter, it would'nt hurt to replace cat conv., it restricts exhaust flow, between you & me , take it off, put a straight pipe in its place, is your inspection up to date ? you'll have a year to replace your CAT, before next inspection. just remember that. nissans this year usually need to have the timing belt replaced, nissan charges $900 + to do it. BIG DIFFERANCE ! see how it runs after tuneup, also , you may end up replacing both the cam & crank sensors down the road. I would replace the OXYGEN sensor/s as part of tuneup, it will help a great deal.

98 chevy blazer starts then dies out

DROP THE TANK & REMOVE ALL OF THE WATERED DOWN GAS FROM THE TANK.USE DRY GAS IN THE TANK AS WELL & A LOT OF FRESH GAS IN THE FUEL TANK & CLEAN UP THE FUEL SYSTEM ON THE TRUCK ALONG WITH REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO BE FULL OF WATER FROM BEING FLOODED OUT.ALSO DRAIN THE OIL & REPLACE BOTH OIL FILTER & OIL TOO WHILE YOU'RE @ IT.CHECK OVER ALL OF YOUR ELECTRICAL WIRING & OTHER ITEMS THAT ARE ELECTRICAL AS WELL LIKE THE STARTER / ALTERNATOR / PLUG WIRES / SPARK PLUGS / YOUR TRUCK BATTERY AS WELL WILL NEED TO BE CHECKED & REPLACED IF HAS SHORTED OUT.EVEN YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM WILL NEED TO BE CHECKED & REPLACED IF THERE IS WATER INSIDE IT AS WELL BECAUSE THAT TOO WOULD CAUSE IT STALL OUT IF THERE IS NO AIR FLOW FROM THE ENGINE TO THE TAIL PIPE.ALSO REPLACE THE AIR FILTER AS WELL IN CASE IT IS EITHER CLOGGED OF WATER LOGGED FROM BEING IN DEEP WATER.
REMEMBER IF ALL ELSE FAILS TO CORRECT IT YOU NEED TO GET IT TO A REPAIR SHOP FOR A COMPLETE CHECK OUT & ALSO TO GET IT FIXED RIGHT.

When my Altima has been running a while (on frwy) At about 60 -65 MPH The car feels like it jumps. Or wants to switch gears. Then when i come to a stop, such as a red light The car sounds and feels as if...

Sounds like your car needs a tune-up, specifically, the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, and/of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve.

Components checked/replaced during a tune-up are:
air filter
motor oil
motor oil filter
breather filter
fuel filter(s)
fuel strainer
PCV valve
EGR valve
spark plugs
spark plug wires
ECM or distributor cap & rotor
cabin air filter
transmission oil filter
transmission oil
engine coolant
check all vacuum hoses and lines

When in idle the car is running rough. did replace spark plugs. the exhaust smell like gas. any help

Sounds like unburned gas from one of the cylinders.
Make sure ALL wires are pushed on fully, if that is not it you might need new wires.

A tune up will not cure the lean code, in fact an engine miss gives a rich code from the unburned fuel. I would suggest u verify u have no vacuum leaks, also clean the inside of the MAF sensor if so equipped and replaced the bank two O2 sensor, that is the passenger side sensor before the catalytic converter. If u have the money replace both right and left sensors, it is better to do them in pairs.
