Yeah; you've got a serious problem. White smoke would also mean the wire insulation has burned off as well. You should also check for a blown fuse...don't replace the fuse - the fuse would just tell you what circuit you're dealing with...most likely the ignition circuit. And, if the wires are not thoroughly checked; the situation could lead to an electrical fire.

If you want to attempt the repairs yourself...I would invest in a Haines/Chiltons repair manual.

Please be careful,

HTH,
Mike

Hi:
I would guess that the most likely suspect is the ignition switch,,,not the lock, but the electrical switch. Most can be bought for less than $40, and not too hard to change. if you can get one.
A good source of help for you is a one year subscription to your Nissan, available at : www.alldatadiy.com It is worth the money , and helps you fix things, step by step.

Chrysler lhs 2001 turning switch

Dear single Mom can't waste money. The relay that governs both the turn signal and the hazard lights is located behind the steering wheel in the steering column. If the lights do not blink, this could be bad or it may be the switch itself.

This repair can be done easily with a little mechanical knowledge. The top plastic of the steering column has to be remove. There is a relay, about 1inch cube on the back of the signal switch. It is usually black but could be gray or any other color. I do not think it comes in pink though! (Haha)! That is the first thing you change. It just pulls out. When you replace the new one, make sure the orientation of the pins are correct. It will only go in one way.

I hope this helps but please be careful if you are going to do it yourself or have someone with no mechanical ability try to do it!

Hi, this is about my moms grand cherokee 93. The

Is the steering wheel its self coming up or the shaft were it connects in the floor coming up. This would help me solve your problem . If its the wheel there is a 18mm nut behind the air bag that holds the steering to shaft.
2ND If it is in the floor shaft there should be a bolt holding the two shafts together, you might have to pull carpet back to see if bolt is in the slot that holds the two shafts together.
If i can be any help just repost. Thanks, dodge tec

cars with high miles some will smoke due to worned piston ring or some of the valves may not be closing properly. key get stuck in ignition can be worn ignition switch, best way to deal with that is move the steering wheel back and forth to get it out of lock position while pressing in the key and rotating it out. ignition switch if fairly expensive to replace. loud noise from engine, take it to any repair shop any experienced mechanic can tell you what the noise is and should not cost you anything just to have him listen to the noise. the last question on the battery and the clutch Im not comprehending what you are try to say, repost and elaborate

Turn signals quit working

I have been there with my '96 cutlass supreme, smoke from under the steering wheel kinda freaked me out also. Changing the switch in the column isn't that hard to do but you must follow the correct procedures. First disconnect the neg battery cable, find the fuse for the airbag and pull it. When you remove the cover under the dashboard(right below the column) you will see a wire harness connection with a yellow colored safety pin(plastic) that is the air bag harness lock, you must pull that out before you can unplug the harness. After that is disconnected the air bag is safe to remove. The wire harness down there is all held together with a screw and can be a little tricky to manipulate but not impossible. Before you start go to your local Murrays or autozone they will rent you the correct steering wheel puller. If you can get a Chilton's manuel for your car it has the step by step instructions. You will also need a set of outside snap-ring pliers and some mechanics wire for pulling the new wire harness through the column. There really isn't that much to disassemble, the switch is one of the first thing you'll see after pulling the wheel off. Don't let this intimidate you, to avoid confusion during reassembly take photos while you disassemble everything for reference.

Rattling Noise

The power steering pump could be going bad. The noise coming from the catalytic converter could be something as simple as a mounting bracket coming loose, or worst case something busted internally.

I have a 2000 ford explorer xl, making whining noise when turning wheels. What could be the problem?

tazvtaz: If you only hear this noise when turning, I would start with the power steering assembly. 1.Check to verify if you have the proper level of power steering fluid first, if not add fluid as required. 2.Chekc for leaks around the power steering assembly, power steering hoses and replace or repair as required. 3.If the problem still exists, then your power steering motor may be on it's way out. You can verify if the noise is coming from the power steering assembly by having an assistant starting the car (in park)and turning the steering wheel, while you observe the operation of the power steering motor and determine if this is where the source of noise your are hearing is coming from. If you have found this information helpful, please vote for this reply, thank you.

Battery light keeps coming on and steering wheel noise

Hi,

Initially, would suspect that the vehicle has a loose belt that is common to the power steering pump and the alternator.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
