The front axle has an actuator that is controlled by a vacuum switch on the transfer case. This switch is a common problem, and if it fails, or has no vacuum, you will have no 4 wheel drive. Check to make sure it is getting vacuum, if it is, most likely a bad switch, Part is readily available for around 25.00 USD, The switch is located on the drivers side of the t-case, above the linkage.

Have a 1985 chevy s10 pick up & the 4 wheel drive wont engage. I already replaced the solenoid on top of the transfer case, & it still wont engage. I can hear the transfer case engage & I have vacum at the...

Make sure that the vacuum hose connector is connected AND connected correctly at the transfer case and at the front differential. If that is all right and the front differential still doesn't engage, then you need to test the vacuum actuator at the front differential.

My 06 ford f-150 will not go into 4 wheel drive, high or low, any ideas?

I have had my 06 on 4 times in a year for will not engage or tries to engage on its own. This system is both electrical and vacuum operated. There is a $40 or so relay in the engine compartment on the firewall just behind the battery. This is the IWE solenoid. Dealer replaced twice. There could also be a problem with the transfer case shift motor. Mine was found to be out of tolerance resistance wise and dealer replaced it. This seemed to fix the will not engage problem. Lastly the system would sometimes try to let hubs engage on there own when applying brakes. This was caused by vacuum leaks at front IWE's. This also caused wear on front wheel hubs. These IWE's are also know as PN 7L1Z 3C247 A Actuator Asy.

4 wheel driver not working

I had this happen to mine, and it was a cracked vacuum line going from the transfer case to the hub. Took 48 cents and 15 minutes to fix.

1990 jeep wrangler front driveline engages but tires dont.

check you vacuum motor and vacuum lines going to the vacuum motor from the top of the transfer case. when u engage your 4WD the valves on the transfer case are opened by a switch on the transfer case. the lines coming from the switch cross the top of the transmission and up the passenger side of the engine compartment. these lines will be red, blue, green and yellow, and often covered by a black sheeth, about 1inch in diameter. check these lines to make sure they are connected. if they are not, the vacuum motor will not engage your front axle. your front driveshaft will still spin, because the transfer case is engaged as normal, but the right front axleshaft is a 2 piece system engaged by this vacuum motor. if they lines are messed up, the motor will not engage the axle collar connecting the 2-piece axle. if your vacuum motor is working, then you might have a broken collar, or perhaps a broken axle shaft. but it's probably just the vacuum hoses or the motor :) i hope that helps!

1995 Pathfinder...4wd will not engage. How does the engaging system work

If you are not using your 4WD more often, your front automatic locking hub will malfunction,
You need to have it cleaned and lubricated, dont use grease please
