I went to a mechanic today and i tried gettin my transmission fluid change but they told me my transmission wouldnt take it because the fuel pump is broken or something anbd the car is hard to change geers

I don't think the key has anything to do with it. Spray a little staring fluid in the throttle body while someone tries to start it. if it fires off, spray a small amount in it to keep it running. if it stops you know you have an issue with a fuel filter / pump or fuel regulator. Main thing is to be sure the gas is getting up to the engine.
I just went through the same problem this year twice. My car started smoking some, and I notice a trial of fluid on the road both times. I'm not sure but my car problems may have started when I got my Transmission flushed.
My car has 100,000 miles and I drive my car pretty hard.
I was first told the torque converter went out. Then I was told the Fuel pump needed to be changed. After being without a car for threes months, I just brought a new transmission and had it shipped to the shop.
From researching online, I think the fragile "Wave spring" in the transmission needs to be replaced and the new version of the "Wave Spring" is a solid & thick metal ring.
Secondly, the Mechanic will need a alignment tool to put the transmission back together properly. The tool is called Sonnex or made by the company I think.
Let me know what you find out.
Also only use Transmission fluid for Mitsubishi Eclipse only.

Had same issue today: as soon as I'd hit a stop sign or just stop it would go like it was on Neutral even though it was in Drive... I though it was the whole transsmition and was resigned to change it completely ($$$) but I took it to an honest mechanic and told me that the 1997 escorts need to be checked on with the hand brake and on Drive (make sure the brake is all the way up) it was missing like almost 1.5 ltrs of Trans. fluid =/ told me to add 1 ltr and to see if it'd stop... it did =D spent not 10 dlrs fixing it... ohh but my transmission fluid was pink going a lil brown sorry to say, you should have it changed along with the filter
Let a mechanic do it. Messing with your transmission is crazy. If you have never had your transmission fluid changed I wouldnt even do it. Changing it might cause problem, the transmission is used to a thicker fluid seeing it would be older. Putting new thinner fluid in could ruin it
