Once you take off the cover, its pretty easy. To get the lower cover off I think the ign key cylinder has to come out. To get this out, insert the ign key, and find the small hole in the lower cover, now put in a small rod ( a coat hanger wire will work) and find the small hole with a pin in the lock housing ( its about 2 inches from where the key goes in). now turn the key on and you will feel the pin depress and now the cylinder will pull out. Lube the cylinder while its out, I use "lock ease" graphite fluid.

I have a 97 nissan altima and my lowbeams dont work but my highbeams do and i already replaced headlights today?? what can i do

Could be your dimmer switch gone bad, that controls your low and high beams, the contacts for the low beam is usually the one that goes bad first, the high beam contact isn't used much.
My Oldsmobile had the same problem, only high beams worked, replace the dimmer switch and fixed the problem. Unfortunately with my car replacing the dimmer switch gave me a hard time. Most dimmer switches are located in the steering column underneath the dash board and a little hard to get at. Dimmer switch costs about 12 to 15 dollars, very cheap but very hard to reach and replace. The switch it self is activated with a small metal rod going up and down next to the steering column and into your turn signal lever, when you pull up it pushes the metal rod down to activate your high or low beam lights.

I have a 2001 ford explorer sport with no high or low beams. when i pull the signal/wiper arm towards me i get the "passing" high beam but other than that i am running on just fog lights. fuses...

yes, ideas, your headlight switch on the steering column may be going bad. try tilting your steering column up and down while pulling headlight switch on, do your headlights turn on and off by them selfs? careful!! this is a hot or positive wire grounding to metal, which could lead to a fire in the steering column!! do you ever see,or smell smoke coming from the steering wheel? if you do,disconnect the positive cable from your battery immeadiatlly!! the only way to replace the switch is the removal of your steering wheel,if you are'nt mechanically inclined,i recommend you get a 2nd opinion and go forward with your problem as it can lead to a fire in your steering wheel or fuse panel! if all your fuses are good, and only have fog lights, but no low or high beams, but pull back on the turn signal switch, you have a problem with the headlight switch.located on the 'turn signal, high beam, low beam switch' on the steering column. the only way to repair,is replace it. sorry!! can recommend autozone auto parts, advance auto parts or try used parts place.but if you are keeping the car, recommend"new" part replacement. thank you for choosing fixya.com!!if we can be of further assistance, please repost your questions to fixya.com!

2007 toyota solara high beam doesn't work, fuses, bulbs and low beam are fine. Could it be a defective switch or sensor?

Hi, the likely problem is the combination switch/wand. The part costs $83 at autozone, but you may want to shop around. Instructions are pasted below the diagram. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

My 1999 ford ranger high beams will not come on. When i turn them on, the lights go out any suggestions?

if you are sure the high beams are not defective you will need to replace the high beam switch on the steering column which is part of the turn signal and wiper switch.

The headlights are stuck on high beam.

pull on the signal lever toward you (ceter position). the signal lever controls the head lights either high beam or low beam. if you pull on the signal lever toward you again, you will have high beam temporarily. and if you push the signal lever towards the front, you will have the high beam locked.

Headlights not working

Ok Guys Thanks I will check into the dimer switch first, But if it is the turn signal switch assembly with the high beam control on it, it will not be cheap, I think they run about 260.00 each.

Thank you for your input.
