You have bent the valves. The only thing that can be done is to remove the head and replace the valves.good luck i now thats not good news.

This engine has been identified has a interferance engine. When the timing belt fails valve to piston contact happens.Resulting in bent vavlves.Yes if you are a tooth out on the timing belt you will lose compressoin due to valves slightly open. But i asure you, you have bent the valves when the belt snaped.Get a hand book and check the timing marks are correct. Its very unlikly that the gears would slip.Good luck once again.

Are you sure you installed the timing belt correctly? I will bet it is off one tooth.

Engine light on

That is a good question but the answer is POSSIBLE but generally NO... and I will explain why

O2 Sensors read the amount of Unburned fuel in the Exhaust and sends the readings back to the Computer. So the computer gets the readings from BEFORE and AFTER the Catalytic converter and "METERS" the amount of fuel it puts into the engine.

The Timing Belt is what keeps the CRANKSHAFT and CAMSHAFT in perfect harmony so that Valves open and Close at the right time. Spark Plugs are firing the Fuel at precisely the right time... All the Orchestra is done by the Timing Belt.

Now, if the Timing Belt was installed improperly (which is VERY EASY TO DO), you would notice a slight sluggish or poorly running engine. Your engine will run being 2-3 teeth off. But you would notice it being off by the way it runs

So can it effect the O2 Sensor? It could but not normally if your car is running properly

Timing belt went.

At highway speeds it may have bend some valves, is this a 4cyl engine or a v-6? this all depends on the mileage and the condition of the car, the cylinder heads would need to be removed and valves replaced plus a new belt and waterpump and timing belt pulleys, this is costly, if its a 4cyl it maybe worth tryying a belt and see what happens, that dont have to put it all back together they can run the engine with a new belt and if you got lucky then put it back together.but if its the v6 engine i would not try just junk it, sorry or replace engine if car is worth it.

dear sir you must take back car and demand a new teninor and idler this will caus belt to ride over to one side and cause shreded belt and belt will come off at dealer or shop it went back to same man and he cant se problem do to belt off if he was to start and let run for 15 min. and in that time start and start and stop motor 3 or 4 times he would see that the belt is walking over to one side do to bearing going out or he may have put washer behind a part but i would go with the idler and tensinor

If it ran prior to removing the distributor, it maybe 180 degrees out. Remove the cap, leave the rotor in place, loosen the bolt and lift it up,turn rotor until it is on the opposite side and place it back in.

The most likely senario is that the water pump went bad which caused the overheating in the first place. Then after the engine shut down, the water pump seized up. When the engine was restarted, the timing belt started to smoke because the water pump, which runs off the timing belt, was not turning. Since the engine overheated to the point of shutting down, blown head gaskets are a possibility. Put a new timing belt and water pump on it and start it up. If it runs OK, you're good to go.
