Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have to turn my key to my starter off and on until I hear a sound as if a motor is running in back of my jeep and then it sounds as if a air flow value is openning up right in front of where the radio is. After this happens my car will start. Any ideas? 1995 grand cherokee orvis. Thanks.

Two different things going on here,If your hearing a noise running in the rear that is the fuel pump pressurizing the lines,That is normal but you should not be able to hear this that well.if you can hear this it is a sign that the fuel pump is getting ready to quit.
The other noise your hearing up front is normal,it is the vacuum releasing from the blend air doors in the heater.

1997 grand jeep cherokee wont start all the way it starts to then you hear a high pitch whine

Sounds like a starter shaft, housing or spring. Possibly a flywheel, but probably not. You might need to either tighten some starter bolts or replace the starter. If the starter bolts are tight, you don't want to tighten them anymore. That will tell you if your starter is loose or just needs to be replaced.

You have a bad starter solenoid. The click you hear is typical. before replacing your starter with a new of rebuilt one from Valeo, the OEM supplier, disconnect the electrical connector and spray some contact cleaner in both it and on the pin side on the starter, wait and let it air dry and connect them back up. Try to start it again. (If there was no click sound, then I would suspect a ground problem on the high tension circuit... chassis ground to the body from the battery. If there is no ground, current will not flow to the starter in the first place.) There are some shops that rebuilt starters, taking your to one of them may save you some cash and support local craftsman!

Hi my 2006 Jeep Liberty won't start or turn over all keep hearing is this click sound when I turn the ignition , Plus I just replaced the battery .

Probably a starter. It sounds like the starter solenoid is working, but the starter motor is not energizing.

You could try this simple trick, but Im about 85% sure you have a bad starter.

Have a buddy help you push the vehicle in neutral for a short distance. When you get it moving at a walking pace, put the transmission in Drive, and let the vehicle come to a stop. You may hear a little clicking, but thats OK, it wont hurt anything. Put the transmission back in Park and try to start the engine again. Sometimes the starter gear gets stuck on the flywheel and it wont engage when you try to start the engine. This trick may move the flywheel a little so the starter can engage.

Battery is good but when I turn it on it just clicks won't start, maybe after 20 times it starts

Without hearing the sound it makes - it's kind of hard to diagnose.

The engine starting process consists of turning the key to start, the starter motor's rotor moving forward to engage the engine's flywheel, and then the starter motor 's "rotor" spinning until you move the key from "start" to "run". You can hear the starter motor spinning - but one usually can't hear the rotor moving forward to engage the flywheel. As a result, you hear the odd spinning sound - which is the starter rotor spinning. The engine never actually turns over because the rotor never engages the fly wheel. If this is the case, then it is very likely that your starter needs to be checked and / or replaced.

Good luck!

I put key in ignition, but motor worn't start. I replacede battery- but not the problem. Lights, radio, air condition all turn on, but no click or any sound when turning key on in ignition?

This sounds like your starter is bad molst likely its the starter selenoid which is usely found on the starter in some older models it was located on the fire wall depending on its loacation will determine its cost. hope this helps.

Turn the key hear a click but nothing else. Still have dash lights etc. No engine cranking sound.

Sounds like a bad battery connection or bad battery. A battery can have enough power to light the instrument panel but not enough to engage starter motor. If the battery and connections proves to be good, then have the starter tested.

Starter spins but dose not turn over

If you can hear it spin(starter), but not actually hear the motor turning over or trying to crank/start..... Sounds like starter not engaging-Replace starter. Small possibility flywheel is damaged, but less likely.

Without hearing it I would only be guessing, however I believe starter solenoid is a good guess.
When you turn the key the first position it applies power to the vehicles ignition coil and other operational components. The second position applies power to the starter solenoid which moves the starter gear against the fly wheel so the starter motor can crank the engine to start the combustion process. If the solenoid does not move the small gear against the big gear you will hear the starter motor running with no resistance producing a high pitch whine. Some of the gears could be missing on the fly wheel but it would not start unless you physically moved the vehicle forward to manually move the fly wheel.
Therefore, I would have the starter (starter and solenoid are usually together) checked or replaced. If you have some mechanical knowledge you could do it yourself with minimal tools. I believe turning the key back is not helping you. You just need to turn off the ignition and try to start it again. Sooner or later the solenoid will fail completely and not work at all. I would not want to be stranded so I would fix it soon but it could work intermittently for a while.

try shimming the starter , it sounds like it is a tiny bit to close to the flywheel and is binding, causing a tinny or metal to metal sound.
dosent sound like it needs a very thick shim .probably no more
than a thousands or two. hope this helps

Starting problem

when you try to start it does the engine spin but not start, or the coomon one is turn the key and just a noise but no spinning of the motor, if motor does not spin over then check the starter and cable at starter, this is a common problem with fords, the cable at starter get corrioded. hope this helps.
