How do you replace dimmer switch on 1999olds 88

Remove airbag fuse. Disconnect battery. Remove two/4 screws (usually Torx-forget the size but rather large maybe T7) from the back side of the steering wheel. Remove airbag assemble . Carefully disconnect the harnesses. Remove the large steering wheel retaining nut. Using a steering wheel puller remove the steering wheel. At this point you may need to remove the shroud from the steering column. Usually t 10 or T15 screws. Remove retaining screws from the multi function switch. Carefully un plug and remove. Installation is reverse. Highly recommend a haynes or Chilton repair manual for this job. Steering wheel puller can be rented from most auto parts chain stores.

How to take sterring wheel off

remove the housing on the steering column, may need a star bit on some vehicles, remove screws on the back of the steering wheel holding the horn/cover on. (sometimes the front of the steering wheel just snaps on and off depending on the depiction of vehicle) after removing airbag/horn/cover or what have you, then the bolts fastening the wheel to the steering column can be removed
note: always a good idea to disconnect the batt. when working with wiring, especially when it comes to airbags.

The tilt steering wheel on my 1988 Chevrolet P/U 2500 series suddenly became very loose and wabbly inside the cab. It still steers fine, but would like to know if there are bearings or something else that...

You will need a steering wheel puller, a lock plate depressor, and a number 4 or 6 star socket. Pull the steering wheel, then the lock plate. Remove the screw that holds the hazzard light button on, there is a spring in the switch so hold on to it. Pull the turn signal lever out of the switch, some have a screw some just pull out, if you do not see a screw where the lever plugs into the switch then it just pulls out. Remove 3 screws that hold turn signal switch in the steering column, pull up on the switch to get it over the end of the steering shaft, if there is not enough slack in the wire you will need to get undr the dash and unplug the wire so it can move up. You do not need to pull the switch out just get it out of the way. After all that is done you should be able to see two holes on the left and right side of the steering shaft, above center, in the bottom of these holes there are star headed screws that have come loose, tighten these and youe wobble will be gone. Then all you have to do is put er back together.

Trying to replace ignition switch cant get steering wheel off

You'll need a special tool called a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel. Then the ignition switch is screwed in by tamper proof torx. You'll need tamper proof torx bit to remove the screws that hold the ignition switch on.

How do i get the ignition switch off my 1997 vw golf i took off the safety boly steering wheel and all plug conectors just left with shaft and spring

This is a how-to from VWVortex.com

You WILL need the following,
10MM wrench
13MM wrench and socket or another wrench.
a eyeglasses phillips head screwdriver. (very small)
a regular size phillips head screwdriver
new ignition switch
vice grips (may not need them)
Instructions.
1. lock the steering wheel, and make note where it was just incase.
2. disconnect the battery with 10mm wrench.
3. remove the plastic around/behind the steering wheel by the two screws underneath using a phillips head screw driver.
4. now go under the dash, and remove the plastic peices covering up the steering wheel axel. and unscrew the bolt using a 13MM wrench&socket. Its a "U" joint.
5. Unplug everything behind the wheel including the ignition and the airbag.
6. using a vice grip, or your fingers if it is loose, to unscrew a gold bolt on the left side of the steering wheel column, its right behind the steering wheel on left underside.
7. Gently pull out the steering wheel, and the whole thing, including the axel, and steering wheel will comeout, be careful the end of it is greasy.
8. now with a small screwdriver (phillips), eyeglasses size is what i used, remove the screw where the ignition switch is, its a pretty long screw so it may take some time and it the switch wont come out until its fully unscrewed.
9. replace everything opposite of how it was took out.
Note- when your putting the steering wheel axel back, be sure to put back the large spring and align the axel correctly.

How to pull steering column for blinker switch replacement

You will need some tools like a steering wheel puller and a few other tools. Take the cover off the steering wheel and the centre nut from the steering wheel. Use the remover to pull the steering wheel. Take the shroud off of the column and you will be able to see what is holding the switch onto the column. Remove the wiring harness and remove screws for the turn signal switch. There might be a star with a pin in the centre. Put the new switch on and put it all back together.

Remove ignition switch

U must dis-arm the airbag 1st, disconnect the battery for 30 minutes before you begin work, then remove the airbag, the retaining screws are at the back of the steering wheel down in holes I believe, after that remove the safety clip at the top of the steering wheel threads, then the steering wheel nut, you will need a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel, they are about $10 from any parts store, after the wheel is removed remove the airbag clock-spring rotating contact, then remove the turn signal switch, there will be 3 screws holding the turn signal switch in, remove them, then remove the lower trim under the dash and crawl under and and disconnect the large flat connector at the bottom of column, this will allow u to pull the turn signal switch up and out of the way, don't force anything be patient, under the turn signal switch on the right of the area above the ignition lock cylinder u will see a black headed screw, it may be a tamper proof torx/star screw head or a phillips, remove it, then turn the ignition to the on position and slide the ignition switch out, reverse it all and put it back together. take your time, don't rush, good luck, contact me with any further questions.

Steering wheel installation

Does it move at all??? If so then the star bolt that goes in the center hole is the brake so to speak.
the lever that turns back and forth on the column has 2 small screws that attach to the lever.
tighten the center bolt until the wheel is secure, then set the tightening lever to the tight position and put the 2 screws in place. they will fit in between the star or teeth on the bolt and attach to the tightening lever.
