How do you replace the license plate light? Do you have to take off the chrome trim to get the lens off? The lens cover binds on the chrome trim on the tailgate. Or do you have to replace from the back?

They are on the same electrical circuit as your marker lights. You could have a bad ground at the license plate area.

How do you replace brake light bulbs

  1. Slide your fingers beneath the carpeted trunk trim and peel it away from the trunk's interior.
  2. Remove the four wing nuts that fasten the taillight assembly to the car. Place the nuts in your pocket or a small bag for safekeeping.
  3. Lift the taillight assembly away from your Grand Am's body. Press the five restraining tabs to release the assembly plate from the lens cover.
  4. Pull the defective bulb directly out of its socket and replace it with the new bulb. Once it's secure, press the assembly plate back into place.
  5. Test the new light to make sure it's working. If the bulb lights up, attach the lens cover, fasten the wing nuts and replace the trunk trim.

Tag light out on 2004 Deville

I just did this today. It is tricky but pretty straightforward. You'll need a very small, sharp flathead screwdriver.
If you look at the light assembly , you'll see the plastic push tab underneath the clear lens. Gently , very gently, pry on the grey plastic trim around the lens until you can access that push tab. Press firmly on the pull tab with the screwdriver and the whole assembly will pop out with a little leverage around the perimeter from the screwdriver. I pulled off the license plate and the entire chrome license plate holder for extra clearance - but this is not 100% necessary.

Replacing the license plate light

Hi,
Their is a plastic lens covering the licence plate bulb. I can be removed by using a flat-tipped screwdriver covered by a shop towel (or tape) on the right side of the lens. It should pop off where you can access the bulb.
Good Luck!
