Check to see if your getting power to the ign.control module from the ignition (with key to on position). If not ,you have an ignition problem. If there is power,it may be a bad ECM.If you can, get one from a 95 pickup that works and switch it into yours just to see if the problem stops.

Where is the ignition module. Can I get to it from under the hood? Should I replace the Crank module when I replace the ignition module?

Hi.

The ICM is located under the hood, next to the coil pack and spark plug wires. Here the part: Pontiac Grand Am Ignition Control Module (ICM).

If you ar having distribution problem and misfire check also the crankshaft position sensor. It signal is used to control coils and sparks.

Van has a misfire ,stumble problem only on hills ,We put new plugs ,wirescap and rotor and a new coil .New fuel filter too it still has a definate buck ,miss stumble

Try changing the ignition control module. Also run some good fuel injector cleaner through it. Lucas, gumout, or marvel mystery oil are good options. Also, open the hood at night and make sure the spark plug wire are not arching on something metal under the hood. Check the spark plug gap, make sure the wires are not crossed also.

1993 VW Cabriolet stopped running at stop sign. Would not restart. Replaced coil, cap and rotor. Car still will not start. No spark coming out of new coil to distributor. Timing light shows no spark...

I would remove and verify the rotor is turning when the motor is cranked over, you may have a broken timing belt. Also check the ignition control module which is mounted under the hood, driver side, upper firewall, mounted below plastic drip tray.

1989 GMC engine turns great , no spark at coil or plugs, had coil tested and repalced- new rotor and cap. not sure where to go next

Check your fuses (ECM) and also recheck your wire leads to the coil. Your ICM (ignition control Module) may also be bad, it's located in your distributor under the rotor. You can have that tested also to make sure it's working 100%, there common to go bad from corrosion caused by condensation under the distributor cap.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck.

need to change rotor and cap , and might as well change wires and spark plugs if its due for a tuneup! yeah have your ignition control module check if it doesn't start after replacing every thing else.

I had the same problem recently but replacing the ignition Coil under the distributor (inside) solved the problem. Also replaced the distributor Cap and rotor at the same time.
