Volvo 850 tight engine - injectors + oil leak from top of cam cover

could be from
bad injectors
air in fuel
leakdown from problem pressure regulator valve
glo-plugs not operating
pump not producing the desired pressure
at this point I suspect that injectors/ pump need reconditioning as the unit is 21 years old probably never having either serviced
take it to an accredited diesel specialist shop for a proper diagnosis and quote

Volvo has been overheating put coolant in but it drains somewhere no leaks are visible now car wont start

This is NOT a good thing...Better check you engine oil. When engine coolant disappears without any signs of it leaking on the ground, it is usually because it is leaking into the crankcase via a blown head gasket, blown intake manifold gasket, or cracked cylinder head. If your engine oil looks milky, like a chocolate milk shake, it is time for major engine repair or replacement.

So tonight I was driving and it felt like I hit something when I didn't. When I got home I looked under the car and it was leaking heavily a dark liquid. The cover to the bottom of the car was already...

Hmmm dark liquid is associated to the oil of the car right? If that is what your are prefering to then, You can have promblem ranging from a blown motor block, oil pan gaskets, to just simply a loose/fallen oil drainage bolt, now you did say that the bottom cover is broken meaning it is the plastic underbody splash guard right. Now this cover is used there to cover debris/water from coming in contact with the engine only. When you mention hitting something, was it like running over something large that made a loud sound or is it like getting hit by small rocks on the highway? If it is a loud sound like a explosion, then it could be bad like a blown piston block, oil pump, but if that is the case you wouldn't be able to driver to far at all. Most likely hearing a noise like you hit something, then yes it can just be your oil drainage bolt that has fallen off from your car and hit the bottom of your car as you were driving. In this case, jack up the car and locate the oil pan which is directly under your engine and see if the drainage bolt is missing. Did you take this car to a shop to change the oil recently? If it is so, that shop did a bad bad bad job and didn't screw it all the way to the specific torquing requirment and with vibration from driving, sooner or later yes, the bolt is going to come off, If the bold is missing, Do NOT drive the car or turn the engine on at all, as there is no oil to lubricate the engine anymore and will cause major damage to the engine which will lead to a engine replacement. Oil drainage bolt can be bought @ your local autozone.

Volvo 960 estate blowing oil from the oil filler cap Whats causing it?

Your PCV / Oil trap is likely clogged. I have had some luck running Mobile 1 Synthetic oil and half a can of seafoam in the engine oil to clean things up but it is likely that you will have to replace the pcv system.

What does SERVICE warninglight mean?

The spanner symbol usually pops up at the recommended service interval for the engine.
A. standard service would include change of Engine oil, oil filter, air filter and possibly plugs.
All other major components and fluids should be checked at this point too, and replaced if needed.
Oil and filters is the minimum to ensure trouble free motoring.
