Here's a couple of things to check out...
1. If the car is on an incline at all, move it to level ground and try starting.
2. Test for fuel pump actuation
Remove the gas cap. Listening very carefully with your head out the door and getting as close to the ground and listening at the gas tank.Turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY, Do NOT try and start the engine. You should be able to hear the electric fuel pump motor run for only 2 seconds and then it will stop. If you can hear it run for the 2 seconds and then stop, You do NOT have a fuel pump problem. If you do NOT hear the fuel pump run for the 2 seconds and stop then the fuel pump, is not working. It may be the relay or pump.
3. Check fuel pump relay to ensure it is ok. It's located in fuse panel under dash driver's side. Note: it probably has a support bar over it.
4. Fuel filter may have been plugged by picking up "gunk" from low fuel condition. Change fuel filter, located under car on the frame rail near the gas tank.

Ran fine, shut off. Came back out, turned over but not start. Had jump started twice but put in gear and died. Question: I know low on gas, can this effect anything?

Possibly a fuel supply issue. Will require a fuel pressure tester. Could be in tank pump or a bad fuel pump relay. In a quiet environment, turn key on (not start position ) and listen if you can hear the guel pump run for 1 or 2 seconds.

92 SL1 won't idle-wants to die without pushing gas-just put in new plugs

Remove, clean and inspect the idle control valve on the throttle body. These tend to clog up over time, or the stepper motor fails. Check this before anything else.

Our 1995 Chevrolet Lumina 3.8L died out of gas last night - we put a little over a gallon back into it and it still won't start. Do we need to put more gas into it to start it or is it more likely now...

Running cars low or out of gas is a problem. The fuel pumps are in the tank and the fuel keeps them cool.
My first guess, since it was run out of gas, is the fuel pump is dead.
Listen for the pump to run when you first turn the key ON (not start, just ON to where the dash lights come on).
If you don't hear the pump then get to dropping the tank and changing it.

Most likely the battery and possibly the alternator are bad.
