Question about 1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited

1 Answer

91 jeep cherokee laredo sometimes start in N or P,switch problem?

I recently bought a 91 jeep cherokee laredo and have been experiencing difficulty starting. The previous owner told me to start it in neutral. I have started it in park, then it wouldn't start at all. At that point the headlights wouldn't turn off. When it was towed home, i had a chance to try and start it again. 3 out of 5 times it clicked or turned over, however i was able to get it started in neutral a few times. Could this be the gear **** neutral interlock switch? Any ideas why the lights wouldn't turn off? thanks!

Likely you have an AW4 transmission. The switch is located on the passenger side opposite the shift lever where the linkage connects on the drivers side. With the side clip on the connector facing up, in neutral or park there should be continuity between the two lower center terminals of the harness plug. If not, the switch is bad. (terminals may be labeled B&C)
A new switch is around $200. but you can take it apart (very carefully...there are small contacts and springs inside) and usually clean it up and re-use it. Or, you can get one far cheaper at a scrapyard.
Don't forget to check the starter relay in the power distribution center and the starter itself as often the only part of moving the shifter and other things done while starting is only busy work while turning the ignition key more than once, which is the actual thing that works.
As for the lights, I have no idea but have seen strange things happen before...take care of the starting problem first and then see if the light thing was just a fluke.

If it is a 4.0 strait six cylinder this is a common problem on them.Mine was located just below the oil filter and is pretty easy to fix.Plan it on your next oil change and it is even easier to change out.Oh just so you know your 4.0 liter engines do make a little bit of noise but are pretty much bulletproof if you just do regular maintence on them.Next time you start it put your ear down by the driver side hood hinge. You will find some tapping noise there it is part of the evap system. If it had no oil pressure you would know it rite away.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4 4.0L. Just recently bought and there's a popping noise in the front and when turning sharply it's like the wheels lock and the jeep refuses to move and it's also...

sounds like a bad cv joint in one (or both) of the front axles. is the popping sound more prevalent when in reverse, with the wheel turned? if so, i'd assume that it is a bad cv joint and one or both front axles will need to be replaced.

It won't start when it is cold but starts fine when warm. Will start eventually if you pump the heck out of it and crank it and repeat quite a few times. I have a 91 cherokee that won't start when it's...

Try cycleing ur key a few times before actually cranking it alot of the time wen a fuel pump is about to go it wont prime cycling the key will prime it. As for the fuel gauge thats part of the fuel pump its called a sending unit and in the jeeps its all in one unit. it sounds like your fuel pump is about to go tho. i had the same problem with my 93 jeep grand cherokee laredo. i replaced the fuel pump and it runs fine now u can get it from your local autozone for about 140. hope this helps let me know
