Hi, the first thing i would look at would be the remote fob that opens the door if this is at fault then this will cause the problem your having.
If it was a problem with the car then volvo would have got an error code when they run a diagnostic check so this to me then point at the central locking remote being at fault.

Now depending on the alarm and imobiliser some new cars have the feature that when your driving the doors will lock to prevent people mugging you at traffic lights but if your car never used to do this then this wont be the cause.

You will probably find that either the remote has got wet or been dropped or the battery in the remote could be on its way out.

I would go back into volvo mention this to them and they should then be able to test the fob for you as the car is only couple of years old then the chances are they will check the fob for free put a sob story on tell them your really happy with the car and have never had any problems but tell them you got out of the car the other day and left your kid in the car whilst paying for fuel then you got back and your kid was locked in the car and you struggled to get in, saying this should get them testing the fob due to the concern of a child being locked in one of their cars.(it wouldnt be very good advertisement for them if you told everyone that kids can and do get locked in their cars.)

Explain to them what i told you about the fob due to the fact if your car has the remote locking then if this battery goes totally flat then the immobiliser wont switch off so your car wont start.

Also does your car have a lock door button in side on the dashboard that enables you to look all the doors at the same time let me know ok.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Hi their is no way of testing the fob yourself,

Just thought does the car lock itself no matter where you are such as on your drive or shopping center what im saying is does this only happen around where your house is or does the car lock itself no matter where you are, as i have heard of cases where the person was at home and they had problems with the car locking and unlocking itself and also not starting, after several tests it was found that it was somebody else wireless device connection causing the problem, this would only be the case with your if the car only plaid up on your drive if it does it no matter where you are then this is not the case.

As for testing the fob this isnt something you can do yourself you cant even change the battery yourself.
What you need to do is go to the main dealers explain to them what i have told you and they will then test it for you or replace the battery if needed, it could just be a case of getting the fob reprogrammed into the cars ecu as it could have been knocked and needs resetting. if this is not the case and the fob is beyond repair then all you can do is purchase one from main dealers and get them to program it into your cars ecu.

The reason this can only be done at main dealers is that they dont want criminals nicking cars and programming their own fobs enabling them to start the car.

If you brought the car from new then stress to the main dealers that you have never had any problems and been really happy with the car they then might not charge for replacing the fob as im not sure how much warranty you get with volvo's

The problem is definatly going to be with the fob so dont worry about it being a fault with the car it may just be that the battery in the fob needs replacing the problem is you need to get this looked at sooner rather than later due to the fact that if the battery goes totally flat then the imobiliser will not switch off and you wont be able to start or move your car as it goes into safe mode if the car dont recieve a signal from the fob, so just be warned.

Their is no easy fix or even much you can do yourself as they made the fobs so you couldnt program them yourself and you cant even change the battery yourself due to the fact that if a thief got hold of the fob then he could if he knew how build his own frequency scanning tool to scan all the frequency these fobs run on so its just nothing anybody can do other than main dealers.

Now to replace the fob isnt that cheap but stress your case to them and they might do it for free depending on how the warranty works such as how many mile s you have done etc as im not sure how much warranty volvo give.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

if the car only locks itself sitting on your drive then this would indicate your getting some interference from a wireless device that's running on similar frequency if you explain this to them then they can change the frequency of your fob and ecu to eliminate outside sources activating your locking system

I have a 2006 Volvo XC70. The key will only turn to Position I, but no farther. Instrument panel lights go on, but the key won't turn past that point.

You will need to replace the ignition lock. This is a problem that I see too often. It will take about a week to get the lock since the factory needs to match the lock to your car.

Can I program the remote for my volvo xc70? Are there instructions?

No, your remote has a transponder inside of it. It has to be programed to read the chip inside your ignition lock. Thats how they communicate to each other and the car knows that, thats the key for the car. You have to take it to the dealer and they can program if for you in like 10 min.
