The end with the spring always goes into the engine or towards the engine if in a remote location. (never towards the radiator) Most housings are designed so you can't put in in backwards but you still need to be careful.

Thermostats are prone to failure for many reasons, I always put I 1mm drill through the flat round surface that seals the coolant flow, reason being a lot of vehicles don't have a air bleed screw to remove any air trapped in the coolant system after a repair is done, and a lot of vehicles suffer damage due to a air pocket around the bronze (wax pellet) or spring side, engine side of the thermostat. if this happens the thermostat may not even open until the actual engine temp has reached a lot higher temp than that stated on the thermostat. this can be the very point when a new thermostat leaks the wax from the bronze cup that once is hot moves the pin that allows the hot coolant to start to flow to the radiator. just like if some one was to totally remove a thermostat it can do more damage to a engine because the coolant flow rate is to fast to conduct the heat of the engine block and head and transfer it to the radiator for cooling down . the flow is simply to fast to be efficient in the transfer and conduction of the heat. with a small drill hole it ensures that if the thermostat fails closed there is still some (little but some flow of coolant) giving you a little more time to pick up on there is a problem arising. also if there were to be any air in that spot it will move freely thru the drill hole and exit the coolant system . some manufactures put a small hole in with a jillger valve for this purpose but if it is a vehicle that is prone to air locks im a fan of the extra drill hole. for any one in Australia remember the 1988 EA F... hope this is of some use to some one out there ;)

Allways use a new gasket and don't overtighten; Stanton makes fine replacements for most cars. If you have an overheating problem, also check to make sure your radiator fan is working; turn 'on' you van and turn the A/C "on" full. In a short time, the radiator fan should come 'on' when the temperature attempts to climb above the half-way mark. If it doesn't, you have a bad radiator fan relay. It's attached to the wheel well on the inside underneath the battery. It's a square metal looking thing with two bolt holes and a connector. Remove the connector and then take out the bolts with a ratchet & socket. Replace with a new one, but clean the contact point very well... heat sink compound also helps (keep it cooler) applied on the underside when installing the new one.

Need to change thermostat in 2003 grand am 3.4

I have done this and the procedure calls for removing the exhaust crossover which you don't really have to do however it is a tight fit and probably will make life easier to get a wobble extension since some of these bolts you cant get right over. It is located on the driver side under the exhaust crossover and a few small waterlines must be removed in order to access it. If I remember correctly the bottom bolt on the housing does not have to be taken out all the way to get it off. the hard part is getting to bolts loose, Just take your time and realize its a hard place to work in.

2008 Dodge 2.7 thermostat housing replacement

Hi Will, Look at the engine and follow the top radiator hose to the place where it enters the engine. Where it connects is the thermostat housing. The domed part is what you are looking for, but if you don't know what it is and what it looks like how do you know it needs replacement? Regards John

I wan to replace the coolant thermast, bu I don't know where the coolant thermastat is located.

if you want to replace your thermostat for the coolent it is located off the upper hose from the radiator going into the top of the motor. you will have to remove the hose from the housing then remove the housing itself and the thermostat will be sitting right there on top. make sure you remember whitch way its faceing so when you replace it you dont sit it down backwards or upsidedown.. also its a good idea to disconnect the battery because you should have ground wires running to the housing. make sure you have the proper gaskett also.. if you need to see it done first go to youtube videos and just type in changing thermostat there are alot of good videos that should help you out... i hope this helps get you going in the right direction..

I need to replace the termastat- Where is the termastat and how is it taken out?

Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine. The hose will be attached to the thermostat housing which is fastened to the engine with two bolts. While the engine is cold, remove these two bolts and lift up the housing to expose the thermostat. Replace the old thermostat with a new one. An auto parts store employee can help you purchase the correct thermostat for your particular application. When you install the new thermostat, be sure to use the rubber gasket that comes with it. Make sure you don't put the new thermostat in upside down. Sounds silly, but it does happen. Bolt the housing back down, careful not to over tighten the bolts since they most likely will be going into aluminum. Replace any antifreeze that may have been lost with a 50/50 solution of antifreeze and water. You can buy this already premixed by the gallon wherever you buy the thermostat.

How do you change a thermostat in 2002 pontiac grand am

with motor cold, follow the top radiator hose to motor, there will be housing at that end of hose close to motor.remove the 2 bolts @ remove the thermostat housing. remember which way you remove the thermostat from that housing, replace with your new one and reverse these directions to put back together. i would also recommend a new gasket with new thremostat.a little rtv or some people call it blue glue might also be needed.when removing the thermostat from housing you may have to remove the top hose also.befor you start, remember fluid will come out of hose and the housing, be prepared with something to catch that fluid.
