It is a pretty involved job without the proper tools....a press is used as Lloyd mentioned. If you do attempt it or if you take it somewhere....make sure they do not discard the shim (if there is one) that is inside the hub when you take the bearings apart. If you do not replace it then you will be fixing the bearings very shortly.
Not sure where you are located but there are some people that will have you ship them a hub assembly and they will rebuild them. Take a look at fordfestiva.com for more help.

You will need a 10-ton press to do this job. The bearings are pushed in & out using very high force.

Hello James.
I don't wish to insult you but replacing the front wheel bearing of a front wheel drive vehicle requires the sort of tool kit and skill level that if you need to ask how you do you do it you are unlikely to possess.

By the time a wheel bearing needs replacing it has been subjected to years of heat, cold and moisture and removing the bearing from the hub can be fraught with difficulties not covered by an average repair manual, difficulties which needs experience and equipment to overcome.
As if that isn't bad enough the work needed to clean and prepare the hub to accept the new bearing needs the realisation the assembly is a piece of precision equipment requiring very high standards if the replacement bearing is to have the best chance of returning a good life-span. This is also true of actually fitting the new bearing where if pressure isn't applied correctly it can be ruined in a second or have it's working life seriously shortened.

I suggest you ask an experienced someone else to fit the bearing this time while you observe.

first check the pads have not worn down to metal if they have the disc will have to be replaced , if the disc is in good condition and the pistons are free press them back into the cylinders and then the pads can removed .check the master cylinder does not over flow as the pistons are pushed back. Brake fluid is a paint remover. the wheel bearings don't have to be touched to replace pads. After new pads are fitted the brakes will have pumped to bring the pads out to the disc.

If the car is front wheel drive a puller is required to dismantle the hub a rather involved job better left to a mechanic .If rear wheel drive do the following. ( Applies to front wheel drive also.) Chock rear wheels,loosen front wheel nuts, jack up car, fit safety stands,remove wheel , remove grease cap from axle. remove split pin or locking nut on axle ,Remove hub, with a punch drive out the grease seal ,the tapered cone bearings can now be removed, the 2 bearing cups still in the housing will have to be pressed out ,all old grease has to be cleaned out. the new cones must be repacked with high temp bearing grease . tap in the seal with the lip facing inwards , slide on the hub fit the outer cone to the axle , the spacer and nut goes on next, tighten the nut to seat the bearings , spin the hub make sure its free to spin, back off the nut one eighth of a turn fit a new split pin or lock tab. fit grease cap and road wheel.

jack the front up and spin the wheel ,lay you pound to a penny the front tyre is deformed ,i blame the garage that checked the tracking and balancing for not checking the tyre first ,but as they only pay peanuts then no doubt it was only a semi skilled grease monkey you got to it for you ,change the wheels front for the rear and then it will be ok

No, you shouldnt need to replace wheel brgs when replacing pads or even rotors . I beleve the brgs are in a sealed assembly and are only serviced when bad.

I have a 2005 Ford focus. I first noticed a rumbling noise which seems to be coming from the front drivers side wheel. If I turn left the noise dies down but I'm not convinced its the wheel bearing. It has...


I have the same problem. I had five new bearings fitted ... one on each wheel and one on the long drive shaft. The noise is now ten times worse so I would guess a faulty "new" bearing being fitted. Ford say that it can only be the final drive bearings in the gearbox now which means an exchange gearbox (not expensive ... around £350 - £400) but add labour and fitting a new clutch while the opportunity is there, I'm giving £700 a nasty look. If I am in neutral with engine running, the noise is not there. If I coast out of gear (with clutch in or out), the noise is there ... can only be the wheel bearings or gearbox driveshaft bearings.

I am getting a pulsing feeling from the front wheels when braking on my 2004 Chrysler Sebring. It feels like one or more of the rotors are warped. How do I replace the front rotors with new ones. Thanks.


If they are not worn beyond tollerance they can be machined on the vehicle.
Also make sure its not tyres or wheel bearings.

remove wheel
remove brake caliper( leave the hose connected)
remove centre cap
remove split pin and lock
unscrew bearing hub nut
rotor should come off
fit new bearing races in new rotor
grease new bearings
fit inside bearing and seal
refit rotor, outer bearing,washer,nut,lock, splitpin and centre cap
(tighten nut until no play in bearing plus 1\8 of a turn)
refit caliper and wheel
bleed and test brakes before driving

How to install wheel bearing in left front of the car


That will be a pressed in type of bearing. It has to be installed from rear of spindle. The bearing is in back & the hub comes through front and into bearing, which also requires press fit. You'll have to remove entire spindle/knuckle assy, and at least get it in a vise or on a bench. It can be done without a press, but has to be done carefully & patiently, because damage to new parts or hub can happen real easy if not done right. Are you equipped for the challenge?

It may be the bearing. located underneath the wheel rotor on the wheel axle. Lift up the car and remove the wheel, brake pads and rotor. remove the rotor and turn the nut that holds to axle in place by removing a small pin. (if there is one) and turning counter clockwise. you will see the bearing under the rotor. Check for missing bearings , dirty oil debris, etc. If it has any of this , replace with new bearing. The exact way you removed it. Do not overtighten the nut. This will cause the bearing to overheat. just tighten enough for the bearing to fit snug with no movement.Make sure you grease up the new bearing good.
