Question about 1999 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

The fuel consumption in my 1999 Golf gti 2.0l has gone through the roof, I noticed a dark grey smoke coming from the exhaust. The MAF was changed and had a new sensor, new rad, new plugs and leads but all this has done is changed the smoke to light grey!... can anyone help?. It also doesnt have the accelorating power that it had when I bought it a few months ago...

Apparently when hooked up to the computer thing it said that the MAF or mass air sensor was faulty - which has now been changed - there was no other error message - and there are no warnings coming up on the dashboard.

Do you have any check engine light coming on ? If yes you may need a diagnostic tool hook up to the vehicle in order to read the fault. Also since you had made some changes to sensor etc, have you reset the ECU of the car which again will diagnostic device.

since you changed the maf, have you tried to reset the ECU?Normally when you change this part, the computer of the vehicle does not know that there has been any change done until it is reset.Try to leave the battery disconnected for 24 hours or use a diagnostic tool to reset it.

I have finally frustrated reconditioned cylinder heads. . change ht leads and the distribution cap but fuel consumption is high blueish to grey smoke.

Hi,blue smoke means that oil is being burned,so as you have reconditionned the head it wont be the stem cills,it could be that you have worn piston rings, the grey smoke is most probably vapour from the exhaust, hope this was some help.

What could be the problem when the fuel consumption is very high and black smoke coming out of the exhaust.

it can be something simple like a dirty feul filter to faulty injectors or airflow. change feul filter disconnect airflow and see if theres a change the engine idle should increase or decrease and and injector cleaner to your feul and monitor

Can't by pass as oxygen sensors control your fuel

I suspect your exhaust converter has failed & the car has
been running rich for years & ruined it

Wouldn't your repair guy be able to solve all your issues,
after all you were at a shop for some work

Sounds like they sold some service instead of diagnosing
the reason you were there

Vectra 2.5 v6 MSD a lot off smoke out exhaust even when warm

Hi Kieth, It would help to know more about your vehicles problem. Is the smoke very dark or is it a bluish grey? Have you noticed heavier fuel consumption or are you using more engine oil than usual? Is the smoke continuous or does it come only during acceleration? Let us know as many details about the fault and the vehicle as possible and in that way we will be able to offer more help. Regards John

Black smoke coming out of tailpipe when started

if its dark black smoke and the tip of the exhaust is pretty black the car is running rich, too much fuel is being used, needs a tune, if the smoke was white or grey its too lean, not enough fuel, if the smoke is blue its burning oil, id say the car just needs a tune or service.

Smoke coming from exhaust at higher speeds or when putting foot down, also acceleration jerky like am blipping the accelerator not cruising used to cruise 110 no bother now its taking it to reach 100

If the smoke is blue, it is burning oil. If it is black or dark grey it is running way too rich, like your choke is stuck on. That would also explaing the jerky acceleration and poor response. Your fuel consumption will also skyrocket.

Suzuki Vitara V6, MAF sensor, white smoke.

Hi:
My first thoughts are that you have a head gasket or intake manifold gasket failure. This is why you have the white smoke. If you run it too long, your catalytic converter will be destroyed. Check for coolant in your oil too.
