Wandering steering on Isuzu Bighorn

I have a 1992 isuzu bighorn 3.2 v6 short wheelbase 3 door. The problem i have is that it has a tendency to wander when it runs over uneven road surfaces and requires a lot of concentration to avoid wandering off to either side.I accept it's a short wheelbase but it's so unnerving for my wife that she won't drive it.It also has as standard,16'' wheels;could these be having an effect. There is a wee bit too much slack in the box I think but this one does not appear to have any external adjustment. Any ideas or suggestions please.
Thanks

If the steering gear box has play in it (make sure to check it with the engine running so it has power assist) then it is time to get a new one.Have someone wiggle the wheel back and forth while looking at the steering linkage (tie rods, pitman arm etc..) If there isn't any play/looseness in the linkage and the ball joints are good you need to get the alignment checked. You may have too much negative caster as that will cause steering wander.

I would suggest you firstly check your shock absorbers and secondly wheel alignment and balancing. If the problem still persists you can move on to the steering. As a safety, have someone move the steering left and right while you do a visual inspection on the moving parts under the car. You may pick up a worn part that needs replacing.

Why, of course, Get an alignment because your front end is too much in the positive caster. Don't let anyone tell you it's the nature of the beast. Good Luck. Ask for the before and after settings to be put on your receipt._Ned_

Steering whel vibration isuzu bighorn 3.1d 1992 auto

Some SUV's have a steering damper. This is like a telescopic shock absorber that is attached to the steering idler arm at one end and the chassis at the other. If the bighorn has one this may be the cause of the problem. It took me months to find a severe steering vibration problem on a Range Rover. I replaced the damper, which was quite inexpensive, and the problem went away.
