How do I check the transmission fluid in my 85 vanagon?

I wouldn't have asked the question if I hadn't tried that yet. Is the fluid check for the manual transmission on the bottom of the pan? I found some diagrams like that. But in the owners manual if it is the correct one it shows a dipstick that seems to not be there when I'm looking in the correct spot. Could it have broken off or something?

Look in owners manual to see where the transmission dip stick is at; than warm up car and check dip stick while car is running. there will be different level reading on the end ; wipe off and repeat again.

Check transmission fluid levels. You may have Shift linkage problems. Usually rubber bushings completely worn out. It could also be a similar bushing problem at the shift lever piviot.

My 85 monte carlo ss does not go into drive until bout 3500 rpm why is that

If your automatic transmission fluid level is correct (check it first) ie.:with engine running, in park, engine at normal operating temprature, check dipstick. If OK: then it might be a dirty (clogged) transmission filter. Service the transmission, replace the filter and fluid.

I have a 1987 vanagon fuel injected gas engine that starts fine, but after 2 minutes it seems to starve for fuel. You can turn the key off and it restarts fine ,but dies again in 2 minutes

A common problem can be the wires to the O2 sensor, and check the connections to the Air Flow Meter. Vanagons are also prone to something called Vanagon Syndrom, which is realted to faulty ground connections. So, check ALL the chassy grounds, by the starter, transmission, battery etc. Disconnect, wire-brush apply di-electric grease and reconnect. Lastly, many of the sensors which feed signals to the ECU could have bad connections, or wires which have breaks or cracks that could lead to corrosion inside the wire increasing resistance. Oh, one more thought, the vaccum lines on Vanagon are covered with cloth and if you pull them off, you can sometimes see cracks in the rubber. The vaccum leaks can also contribute to the problem. Now I would be remiss to not warn you about changing the fuel lines on your nearly 25 year old van. The rubber on these lines have been known to breakdown and leak, leading to engine fires. There is a great web-site called vanagon.com that has all sorts of great informaion on these wonderful vans. I've owned my 84 Vanagon Westy for 23 years. Hope you find this helpful!

I need to find the brake and clutch fluid

Hello,
I looked in my info and it says the master cylinder is located behind the instument panel. All I show is a Vanagon. Try looking for a recessed place near the winshied. Your supposed to be able to raise the cover at this recessed point. Then disengage rear catches and remove cover. Maybe that's it.
Hope it helps
Good luck.
