You're low on coolant, or you need a new thermostat.

Why does it heat up but fan won't go?

car heats up how much? the temperature gauge goes into red range ?

cooling fans on cars nowdays run by electric and operate separate from engine running or not , they go on when a thermosat closes and stop when same opens up , now as you drive some air is allways going thru front of car (unless you drive around in reverse like the wife does) so as long as your moving along at over 30 mph the fan doesn't need to run to bring cool air into car for cooling

2009 Mercury Mountaineer, my heater wont work unless I'm driving and get over 50 mph... I let my car warm up for 20-30 minutes and it wont defrost my windshield, it only blows cold air.

i would check the thermostat,i think its stuck open the coolant is running cold so you should install a new thermostat with higher degree.

its probably the kickdown cable look under the hood its the cable that runs next to the throttle cable see if there's alot of slack or if its too tight and not letting it release all the way.

Is it true that the transfer case will heat up significantly if driving int he winter for less than 15 miles at less than 50 mph ?

All components heat up to some degree when you use them however driving short distances should not hurt your transfer case unless you have engaged in 4wd full time instead of part time or awd mode. The 4wd full time mode is for wet or snowy roads or mud. Awd mode is good for any condition and so is 2wd mode.

My 2004 Chrysler Sebring blows our cool air only when idling AND driving in town. On the interstate it blows out hot air. Sometimes it will blow out warm air in town if I'm going 35 or 40 mph. Its a tad...

When the engine temp looks normal on the gauge but you get no heat inside unless your keeping the RPMs up by driving it,It usually means the fluid in the radiator is very low.wait until it is cooled completely and remove the radiator cap and fill completely,Check resovour and fill to correct level,

Air conditioning works but not heat. blows out

At the radiator, drain and then flush with water then add 1 gallon of new antifreeze and top off with cool water. Now the cooling system will work.
If you have not performed routine maintenance on your cooling system - it will clog the heater in 10 years or less. Sometimes a bottle of radiator flush (purchased at any walmart or kmart) can clear the heater core - but you will have to run it with the heater on full heat setting for a few hours of driving.

I have no heat in my 95 4s grand am but. the ac works great.

sounds like you have a thermostat that has stuck open and is letting the engine run too cool. when car is still there is no airflow to cool off radiator and you get heat, while driving the coolant is always cooled off and no heat.
