Question about 1999 Saturn SL

1 Answer

Don't know what warning light means

Can't find my manual for 1999 Saturn SL1. Warning light next to the coolant light is flashing (both are simultaneously actually) and don't know what it is supposed to signify. Anyone familiar with this that could help? Thank you.

No, my temperature guage is not rising higher than normal. I just had my oil changed last week Monday, and when these lights came on yesterday for the first time we checked both the coolant and oil and both were at proper levels. My vehicle does have 99,300+ miles on it. Two weekends ago I did have my PCM under the dash fixed as it had come unconnected. Since then I did have low oil (it was stupid I meant to check it had been doing a lot of driving back and forth due to moving and just forgot cus I was busy with a million things). Had them change oil and it is fine now.

In receiving another gentleman's response, the warning light looks like a rectangle w/ an arrow pointing down inside the box. And in the box along the bottom is a wave looking thing like for water or something. Above the box is what would look like a button to press or something of that nature.

Is the temperature rising higher than normal? Have you checked your oil and coolant levels? Only check coolant with engine off and cold. Many GM products have had faulty coolant level sensors. If all fluid levels are OK, and the vehicle runs and drives fine, the sensor is very likely the culprit. If you check your coolant and find it is low, or that there is orange-brown sludge or goop accumulated in the radiator or the overflow tank, a coolant system flush and refill with universal coolant is highly recommended. The original coolant is called Dex-Cool, and can turn into sludge and corrode certain components in some circumstances. Be sure to have all coolant removed and replaced with universal antifreeze if a flush is performed. Your local parts store may be able to scan the car for trouble codes, which will help to narrow the possibilities.

What exactly does the warning light look like? It is probably the transmission warning light. The transmission uses the radiator to cool the transmission fluid. You need to have your cooling system serviced on a 10 year old car. Drain, flush, fresh coolant, new thermostat. A full service. Keep driving and you may end up with a transmission repair. Good luck.

OK, that is the low coolant warning light. You have almost 100,000 miles on this car. Time to service the cooling system. Something is amiss if it is not overheating. Do not ignore this and neglect this service. Fresh coolant and a new thermostat immediately.

What years are interchangeable for a manual 5speed transmission in a 1999 saturn sl1?

96-99 SL1, SC1, SW1. Avoid the 2 models, they are DOHC and have different gear ratios

What does the warning light with down arrow (I know oil, water, and battery lights) mean?

On a saturn with a manual transmission the down arrow means to downshift to a lower gear and the
arrow pointing up means to upshift to the next gear.

Blinking Orange Exclamation Point on 04 4runner

Since your question is listed as a 1999 Saturn SL and a Toyota 4Runner, I will answer both:

1999 Saturn SL
Typically the orange exclamation point dash warning light is indicating a problem with your brakes, parking or hand brake. Check to ensure that your emergency brake is completely disengaged.
Check to ensure proper brake fluid level.
Otherwise this could be indicating a problem with the ABS system.

04 Toyota 4Runner
Low tire air pressure. Inflate to approximately 32 PSI should correct your problem.

I hope this helps.

Have a red light warning on the saturn 2000 SL with a wave on the bottom and a another wave upside down on the top..what does this indicate.. Mechanic first said coolant problem and added the antifreeze...

There is a sensor in the coolant overflow tank and when the antifreeze gets below that line the warning light comes on. When the coolant level is falling below that line it means the coolant is going somewhere and not staying in the system. Leaking radiator, water pump, hoses, heater core, bad gasket all come to mind. Generally you will see a green or orange stain on the ground where the car is most often parked, that will lead you to where the leak is. But it may only leak after it is warmed up and running so you would have to examine under the hood to find a stain there.

1999 Saturn SL1 - trouble starting, like it's flooded. When finally started, a big puff of smoke came out the back. No computer indications. Help!

You've actually diagnosed your own problem. It essentially is flooded and that is because your Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) is bad and telling the PCM that the engine is -40F (40 degrees below zero).

Replace the stock plastic one which cracks with a new brass one found at Autozone or the like. It's a 10 minute job and requires a 13MM deep well socket.
