I had the same problem in my 99 Olds Cutlass (same car basically). It is the TP Sensor. Throttle Position Sensor. Don't buy aftermarket part form an auto supply store. They are much cheaper but I went through two of those at $100 each before I bought the OEM part for about $225. :(

Throttle body base gasket or the bolts that hold it down may have loosened.

You should check for vacuum leaks. Also you should have the OBD scanned for any existing codes.

5.8 idle speed adjustment

In the past, adjusting an engine idle was easy. Manufactures have removed these adjustments on modern vehicles. The power control module or PCM now determines the speed at which an engine idles. The idle is controlled by the Idle air control. Remove and clean it out, it may be sticking, and making a fast idle. but if not done correctly, it can result in even worse idle issues. You can clean it with throttle body cleaner. Clean all the carbon from it, do not push on the pintle if it has one. Hope this helps you! God-Bless!

P300, p507 codes on my 1998 vortec 5.0 litre silverado engine

Well code 300 is for a random cylinder miss, and code 507 is for a problem with the idle air control valve.
The computer controls idle speed by regulating the amount of air entering the intake thru the control valve. Code 507 is saying the engine is running too fast at idle. It could be a faulty valve or a vac leak among other things.

What Makes a 1990 cutlass calasis idle fast.

Could be a dirty or stuck throttle plate, faulty idle air control valve, or a large vac leak.

Fast idle

Fast idle could be the result of a few things; however, I would start with your Idle Air Control (IAC) Value. This is is mounted on your car's throttle body and it controls your vevicles idle speed under various conditions. It is easy to access. Try cleaning your IAC. Even a little bit of carbon build up could impact your car's idle.

I have a 2002 PT Cruiser. On a cold start it starts on fast idle which is excessively fast. It is actually unsafe to put the car in drive. It will stay on fast idle for 5 minutes before dropping, but then...

code p 1193 refers to inlet air temp sensor problem --circuit high
a faulty ambient air temperature sensor or barometric pressure sensor will cause this effect as the idle control in the ECM is not getting correct temperature readings to set idle speed

What kind of carb does the 76 c10 4x4 come with need to adjust

mcdevito75 here, The fast idle is needed when the engine is cold to make the air and fuel mixture rich to keep the engine running while cold, the carb. choke doew this with a bi-metalic spring in that balck round box on the side of the carb, a screw also hepls keep the choke closed until warm up, this screw can be adjusted tpo control how tight it holds the choke cloesed, here"s how to adjust this screw to slow fast idle speed, Locate on the carb, where the gas pedal connects, have a friend operate the gas pedal with the engine off, once you locate the linkage, you"ll also see 2 screws with springs around them, 1 is for fast idle the other for regular idle, you want the fast idle screw, notice this screw will lay against and Half moon shaped tab, while the other screw lays against a shaft, you need the screw that lays against the half moon shaped tab. Start the engine and step on the gas pedal slightly and relaease, at the screw that lays against this half moon, simply turn it counter clockwise or toward you just 1 2 or 3 turns very slowly, you'll hear the fast idle come down but you don"t want the fast idle to low, listen to the engine very carefully, slow it down just a bit, it should still race though but not out of control. Of course for a full carb, adjustment the shop should handle that., but this info will help.

Engine idle speed too fast some times. idle speed

Three things to check for:

1) High idle switch is on..*(vehicle thinks AC is running but it isn't.
You can try turning on the AC and see if the engine slows down to confirm this one.

2) Sticking or worn out Idle Air Control or IAC, You might get a check engine light with this might not if it's a mechanical failure.

3) Simplest of all. A vacuum leak. You can get the engine vacuum read while running if you go to a mechanic with a vacuum guage or an OBD 2 ecu code reader. There should be specs on what vacuum levels are normal for you car at idle.

Good luck and be careful!

Ford failed MOT on High CO emission

High CO usualy means the O2 sensors are not reading properly. Take it to a parts store that can read codes, I know Auto Zone does in my area. If it is the O2 sensor it is an easy fix but the sensors run about $50.00 each.
