Backfiring is a sign of low fuel pressure. sputtering is a sign of a misfire, You should have a code stored. Get the code to further diagnose

Like Ron says,timing chain is possibility,usually only above 150,000 though it can happen sooner.
I'm wondering if it has a crankshaft position sensor?
