Question about 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix
If it is manual transmission, then it is the gear box.
If it is auto tranny, then it can be just anything, inside and outside the box, from a bad TPS to a slipping component in gear box.Several things must be tested to find out.
The first test to do is an OBD scan reading. This can be done for free at Autozone. If you have codes this may address the problem.
Check transmission fluid, ensure you refilled at level using fluid for this vehicle.
The shifts solenoids inside valve body in transmission must be tested, if one of those had blown , one or more gears will not work.
Solenoids are tested reading Ohms at their contacts.
The TPS(throttle position sensor) must be tested. A test is done reading volts at TPS while someone else is slowly pressing down throttle pedal. Volts variation must be smooth, or TPS is bad.
The crankshaft sensor and speed sensor are also used by trasmission. When the sensors are the problem you usually get troubles on more than one gear.
The TCM (transmission control module) is the computer module that collects impulse from sensors and activates the shift solenoids on transmission. This module can be tested at an authorized dealer using a diagnostic tool.
A slipping component inside the transmission box, or a broken gear can still be the problem, this is likely if before putting the used transmission you have a different problem than only 4th gear not working.
I suggest doing a fault code reading and testing transmission shift solenoids, sensors, and if possible the TCM at garage, then if the problem cannot be fixed the used gear box may be faulty.
Common codes may point at faults with:
