Question about 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I'm having an issue that seems to only occur 50% of the time, but lately it's been 100% of the time. A list of things that wont work sometimes, and then automatically all start working again. -Power Windows -Power Door Locks -Interior Light Sensor (When I open the door) -None of the gauges work -All of the warning lights on the dash turn on (Seatbelt, Abs, Air Bag, No gas, Brake, etc...) -And finally..When I start my Jeep, it will turn over, start, the engine will run for a few seconds, and then it will cut itself off. Any help? Thanks

I'll check all the grounds, and I already had the control module diagnosed, and was told it's fine 100%

Is there a list of all the ground points, (Where I can find them).

Check all your ground points...battery cable at both ends, all fender , firewall and under dash brace. If all are good, clean and secure, it's possible that the body control module may have an internal fault.

I'm likely to forget a few but generally there is one from the battery to the fender nearest to it, one strap from the engine to the firewall and usually at least two near the computer. generally they are smaller wires with a star washer attached to the fender etc, the engine/firewall strap is generally a woven exposed metal strap. connected between the back of the engine and firewall.Only one that isn't obvious would be under dash. i generally run a wire to the dash frame right from the battery and don't even bother looking for the real ground points.(I actually run a 10gauge or heavier wire all the way around and connect everything to it on all my vehicles, then, never need to worry about it again.) I can't say for sure if this will fix the problem but it will eliminate another variable from the mix.

Engine runs rough

It could be a lot of things. What maintenance has it had? Spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, distributor, coil, mass air sensor, clogged PCV valve, vacuum leak, primary oxygen sensor, skipped timing, clogged air filter, bad tank of gas, bad battery ground - any of these could cause that. Has the car had any of this done lately? Has it had any other work done lately? Sometimes while doing one maintenance procedure, something can get bumped or disconnected and cause other issues.

Cuts off at 70mph when accelerating.

Best thing to do is go to an Auto Zone and have them scan your truck for any DTC codes. Auto Zone scan free of charge, there is just to many things that can cause the engine issues your running through such as detonation during acceleration due to timing issues to lack of fuel pressure. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your truck running 100%

Sounds like the window motor is shorting...been to a car wash lately...or often? The easiest fix for this is to have Sears Auto or Walmart test your charging system...sometimes it's FREE or nominal charge unless you buy a battery...
P.S. Walmarts "Everstart" is rated highly.
Then, go to a BODY shop and ask them to diagnose your window motor...$50 + part, maybe $100 total.
Good Luck...avoid automatic car washes

Have new fuel pump and new fuel filter, and when it starts it runs fine but sometimes it seems like the fuel pump is out and wont start lately its been hard starting

There seems to be a voltage issue here. i would preform a voltage test. there should be 14 volts going to the pump. if its lower than 14 volts, this will be the issue. weak pump flow. also, there may be some trapped air in the lines. this will happen during a new installation.

please rate and god bless..

Toyota SBV Overheating

If there is no oil in water or water in oil, try having your radiator and cooling professionally cleaned at a radiator shop and tell them to install a new TOYOTA thermostat. Sometimes aftermarket thermostats do not work properly in Japanese cars.

Worst case, if the oil has a milky substance in it or the water has an oily scum on top of the coolant, you probably have a blown head gasket which frequently occurs when an engine overheats. A good radiator shop should be able to test it for both. That could be a major expense. Trade it quick or repair it and plan on keeping it for a long time.

The coolant should be at least a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water. 100% water will not work and 100% coolant will not work. Most auto parts stores stock the pre-mixed 50/50. Even though some coolants are advertised as PERMANENT, I've never trusted them. Most mechanics will recomend a change ever 3-5 years depending on how the vehicle is driven. Short trips are sometimes more of a problem than longer trips because the vehicle does not stay at operating temperture long enough to benefit from the HOT circulation of coolant.

If you do it yourself, be careful to get all of the air out of the motor block. Some are more difficult than others to do. The old way was to fill it up leave teh radiator cap off until you see evidence of circulation and you know the thermostat has opened. You may have some of it overflow but that could be caused by an expanding air bubble and not too much coolant. Again watch for the circulation. Watch any leaking leaking/excess anti-freeze, it has a sweet taste to animals and will destroy their kidneys.
