Hi,

A very common problem in 1999-2004 model Grand Cherokees has been weak blend and recirculation doors in the HVAC systems. The doors are turned by a motor attached to the bottom of the door at the end of a hinge shaft. The motor stops turning when there is enough physical resistance from the door stopping against its housing. This puts stress on the shaft/door junction and over time strips the shaft so that it spins almost independently of the door. The motor then experiences little resistance and keeps turning, which sends the "travel too large" code.

In January of 2004 Jeep issued an informational TSB (#24-001-04) which introduced newly designed sub assemblies. The newly revised assemblies have stop tabs that stop the motor from turning, instead of relying on the weak shaft/door contact. It is recommended that the respective sub-assembly be installed if a blend air door(s), a recirculation door, a door link, or a sub-assembly housing requires replacement. The table below provides the part numbers for the new HVAC sub-assemblies.

Most common failures - The most common failures will require the replacement of the HVAC sub assemblies. This requires removal of the entire instrument panel assembly, a very involved process.

Least common failures - The least common failures are the door actuator motors. These should be checked first as they are the easist to replace (with one exception). The single motor for the Manual A/C system can be accessed and replaced by simply removing the glove box. The Auto AZC system uses 2 actuators. Only the drivers side actuator can be accessed from behind the glove box. If you are getting cold air/no heat on the drivers side only, there is a chance that drivers side actuator could be defective. If you have cold air/no heat on the passenger side, the actuator that controls this side requires removal of the entire dash and HVAC assembly.

HVAC sub assemblies (most common failures)

Cold air only / No heat on passenger and/or drivers side / Door travel too small / large

1998 GRAND CHEROKEE BLOWS ON DEFROST ALONE

Hi I have a 2002 JGC ltd and it is most likely your dampeners or louvers located behind your temp controls (inside the dash) for driver and passenger sides that control the direction of air flow from air outside in, circulation, heat to windshield, centre and or to floor etc. I had a friend that had heat only to the passenger side and cold air blowing to driver side. He took it in and they replaced stuck dampeners and it was not cheap. Sounds like the tipical problem with heaters.

Do you have dual zone control on the heat a/c control? It's been my experience that is the first thing to go. The blend door is more of a problem between blends, Like bi-level (defrost and floor etc..)

Thats your blend air door. . .I had the same thing with my 02 Grand Cherokee and I think ALOT of other people have as well. I took it to the dealer and ended up costing right around $800, because they have to pull the dash apart to get to the blend air door.

2001 jeep heater on passenger side not working

there should be a small valve attached to a hose coming from the engine into the firewall this valve directs the hot engine coolant into the heater radiator in the heater box it probably is closed open it and, you should have heat then: it should be easy to find the reason it was closed

Did you check your coolant level or was it low and you added to it at some point? If so the system my need to be bleed or worst case the thermostat is going bad.

2001 Grand Cherokee Heat on one side cold air on the other side?

The blend door on the passenger side has broken. Jeep has made a replacement section for the heater box assembly so you don't have to buy the whole thing. You will need to remove the heater/A/C box to replace the part. I have done quite a few of these repairs to fix the problem

Temperature control only puts out heat on drivers side

The digital thermal control is bad. The part usually goes out after 6 years near 80,000 miles or sooner with excessive use. The controler box behind the dials used for temp. has a spring inside which always breaks, the part is non serviceable, in other words, you can not buy the spring, you must replace the entire unit. Unfortunatly this is a dealer only part.
