Question about Honda Pilot

1 Answer

After replacing timing belt on my 2006 pilot, the car will not start. I smell gas, there is no back fire or anything banging around. Also forgot to disconnect the battery.

If the battery was not disconnected for 10 minutes, the computer is not recognizing new timing. It may take up to 20 starts for computer to recognize the new belt.

Replaced a timing belt and car wont start.

Sometimes it's wise to count the teeth to make sure you're right on. Usually if the timing is a little off it'll still ignite fuel a little and pop. If it ran prior to doing the work, you may have forgotten to plug something back in, I do it quite often. If the timing belt broke, it may have bent valves. If you're smelling fuel, it's unlikely it's being ignited. I'd check compression just in case, and make sure you're not 180deg off. If you're going to remove the belt again, check the #1 piston is all the wAy up, check to make sure the distributor rotor is pointing to #1, and check to make sure cyl #1s valves are closed.

Flooded start

That was probably part of your timing belt and bang was a backfire when it jumped time, more than likely you will have to have new timing belt installed. The putts is it trying to fire on a non-compression stroke, don't crank it much, some models the pistons can hit the valves if it gets really out of time and that gets expensive.

2006 durango will not start

I would check for spark first with a spark plug tester. They are about $10 bucks and very easy to use. Then check all spark plugs for massive wear, and then check all spark plug wires for breaks or burn holes from motor. If not any of these, then I would check to timing belt. Once you diagnose these things, get back to me and we'll go from there. Good luck. P.S. Did the check engine light ever come on?

TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT TIME IS AT 105000.IF TIMING BELT NEED CHANGING I WOULD ALSO CHANGE WATER PUMP BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE REMOVED TO GET TO TIMING BELT.TIMING BELT HAS TO BE REPLACED.IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO PAY $775.00 THEN TO PAY $3000.00 OR $4000.00 FOR A NEW ENGINE THATS INCLUDING LABOR IN ALL.

I backed out of the drive way today and put it in drive and the car died. We can not get it started. It sounds like it's out of gas. It's turning over but not firing? It ran great last night.

is it out of gas?? if not after cranking over engine pull out a spark plug if
there is fuel it will be wet and smell of gasoline. next thing will be to determine if the vehicl has spark-put the plug into the plug wire place the plug onto the engine block (away from fuel sources) and have
some one crank over the engine breifly-note that you could get a shock
if the spark plug is not properly grounded (if this happens then you r doing it wrong). watch for spark across the electode. engine needs three basic needs-air fuel and spark with that it will ****,sqeeze, bang and blow....the four stokes of a 4cycle engine.

I have had a small tapping noise in the engine for a while. yesterday a loud bang now its a very loud putting/banging noise. still runs but something very wrong. you can smell the odor of gasoline coming...

It sounds like you had either mild lifter lash or a plug wasn't gapped properly at first which has now gotten even worse. The gas smell that you have may be caused by a plug not firing due to misgap or a lifter that isn't functioning due to breakage. I recommend parking your vehicle as soon as possible. Have it towed to a dealer or trusted repair shop if at all possible. More use of the vehicle may cause irrepairable/ more costly damage.

The timing is off, hence, the backfiring. This could be the crank shaft sensor, coil packs, or the timing belt has slipped.

There is a possibility that your timing belt has a couple of teeth missing now. When was the last time the timing belt was replaced? The reason for the fuel smell is the engine is trying to fire at the wrong time. It's trying to fire when the exhaust valve is actually opening. Replacing the belt isn't a bad job.
