It is really hard to say what has gone wrong with the case without a tear down, most likely the transfer case chain is slapping the case from wear.

I would first check the fluid of the transfer case, and visually check the drive-line to make sure nothing is rubbing.

I just went out in the mud in 4wd and had to get on it to get out of a puddle. Now where my 4wd drive line connects to my transfer case is smoking what could be wrong?

Does the transfer case work? Can you 4wheel? If you answered yes then wet mud and hot metal mean smoke.
If case doesn't work you blew it out.

Hi, you will probably have to take to mitsubishi dealer and have them scan diagnostics....but sounds like the o ring has busted in transfer case. will it shift in and out of 4wheel drive? If not don't drive it...it will cause alot of damage.

Part-time 4wheel drive

you have a bad or faulty sensor that communicates the 4wd position to the dash the sensor is on the top front of the transfer case. Find a large open area and drive in reverse for about 500 feet then put car in drive and pull forward this might enable the sensor to know what position the transfer case is in The transfer case is connected to the transmission and also to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts. If this doesn't work change you sensor on the top front of your transfer case. hope this helps you please rate me and for further assistance you can always ask me. wutxtye0rjd9d9ekmodqt1eoxkvn9hr9qjz1l3dabggyud7sdgr36czsrfxqenadhnijx9nfayi+sz1sug0aaaaasuvork5cyii=
