The speedo should get power from the same circuit the other gauges are on. If the speedo and odometer are not working, the problem could be the speed sensor in the transmission.
Hi, I am new to the website. I am an automotive technitian. If the ABS light is on ,and the speedo wont work, your vehicle speed sensor (vss) is likely the cause! The ABS system depends on knowing the individual wheel speed and the overall vehicle speed in order to properly operate. The fact that your speedo also is out tells me that either the sensor is bad or there is a wiring problem. The ABS light will stay on and will probably be in "limp mode" until the problem is solved.....if you live in a snowy or icy place be careful because it probably wont work! If I am right, even a simple code scanner like an auto parts store has for free use will show a vss code since it will affect other systems in the car such as shifting points and fuel trim. I have no history on your car...and dont even know the type of car it is so I hope this has been helpful!!
The speed sensor that is under the trans. mount on the driver side sends the shift points to the computer telling it at what point to shift. The sensor that actually controls your speedometer is in the back near the firewall. It is tall and should have a silver heat shield over it. However, the problem that you have described sounds more like an electrical short or a wire grounding out somewhere. I would check for wires getting pinched under the steering column in the dash since things quit working when you are turning. Also check the wiring behind the instrument cluster. Elecrical problems can sometimes be complex and hard to find but with some due diligence they can be solved. Hope this helps.
It may be the cable but its hard to say because i dont know the year, make and model of this car, newwer cars use a speed sensor and not a cable so i would start by checking the speedo cable or the speed sensor on the trany, good luck.
it is possible,if it's not a speedo itself.
if you would have VAG COM scaner , you could check instrument cluster and determine if you have bad speedo or speed sensor.
Speed sensor on the transmission , should be around differencial.
I tell you for sure that is the sensor problem from gearbox.the sensor, or the wire. The fuel gauge is connected to the gearbox because is not very nice to corner and the fuel gauge go up and down. Now because the fuel gauge "didn't know" how many miles did you made, he is moving up and down. All recent cars have the same problem, and had the same problem on my girlfriend Golf 4. It was the wire. The mecanic forgot to put it back.
SOUND LIKE VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR.CHECK THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR MAKE SURE ITS INTACT NOT LOOSE OR DAMAGED.ALSO MAKE SURE VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR IS NOT LOOSE OR MISSING MOUNTING BOLT.IF ALL LOOKS GOOD.THE VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR IS BAD.
