Question about 2006 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

I plugged a charger for my computer into the cigarette lighter and it stopped working. I checked the fuse as diagrammed in the owners manual and on the fuse cover. The fuse was not burned out... I checked all the 15V fuses and they were all intact... is there an inline fuse somewhere that may have burned out?

Nothing I plug into the cigarette lighter will work now... I was plugging in my GPS , won't work now... there is no power at the Cigarette lighter now.

The socket worked fine until I plugged in the auxiliary power supply for my laptop. I use a two socket device so I can use my GPS and XM radio receiver at the same time. I unplugged the XM radio and plugged in the laptop computer power supply for the first time. The GPS was powered up too. Immediately the GPS blanked out and there was no power to the converter. I uplugged the converter and GPS and checked my underdash fuse, it was still intact. I have no power at the cigarette lighter... Thats why I was wondering about an in-line fuse.

Ok lets try one more thing. Is there a way that you may be ablr to take out the cigarett lighter socket or at leat get to the wires? If you can use a a voltmeter or a test light to see if you are getting voltage to the wires. If you have voltage at the wires. Then you have a faulty cigarette lighter socket.

Have you checked the fuse in the plug of the computer. Usually you can unscrew the side that goes into the lighter. Inside there should be a fuse.

Open your owner manual and locate fuses. The diagram and chart will show you where the 'cigarette lighter' fuse is located, and what the value is.

WHERE IS FUSES FOR CIGARETTE LIGHTERS LOCATED

Should be under the steering wheel like any other car. There is a box. Just open up the box (You may need to pry off the cover with a flat head screw driver). I own a 91 Explorer and there is a diagram right on the back of the cover along with a fuse pulling tool. The owners manual will also have a diagram. Look for the terms "Accessory", "Lighter", "Socket" etc. Any Ford I've ever seen supplies power to the cigarette lighter even when the car isn't running so it will be easy to test.

My cigarette lighter is not charging in my car what could it be?

You mean there seems to be no power to the vehicle's lighter unit outlet.

This lighter unit outlet is normally wired through its own fuse so check the fuse panel in the car for a blown fuse. If blown it must be replaced with a fuse of the correct amperage. The owner's manual will show you where the fuse is located.

Before you check the fuse just check the cigarette lighter outlet with another plug-in device if you have one such as a portable 12 volt tire compressor or a 12 volt plug-in auxiliary light. It could be that if you are using a charger from the outlet, the charger plug or wiring may be faulty rather than the car's power outlet itself. (These outlets don't usually give trouble unless the wiring has been messed with or the outlet itself has been damaged or abused).

If no device works from the lighter power outlet check the fuse as it may be blown.
