1995 Saturn SL1 is shifting hard. We have checked the transmission fluid level (o.k.)we've checked fuses (o.k.) All of a sudden it shifts like it should . What could be the cause? Automatic transmission.

There are many reasons for the trans to shift roughly, 1st and foremost is dirty or worn out fluid, the transmission needs to have the fluid and the filter changed every 60,000 miles or 95,000 Kilometers, this requires you remove the pan off the transmission and drain the fluid out, the filter is also under the pan, this is a very messy job and requires the car be off the ground, many shops do this service very cheaply and I recommend u have a shop do it for you, if after the service you still have a problem you will need to run a transmission control module (kome as the TCM) trouble code test, this trans is electronically shifted so a defective control component can cause the problem as well.

The things to be checked which would fix the problem of rough shifting are as follows

  1. Check your clutch throwout adjustment is correct. It may be that the clutch is not releasing completely between gearshifts,
  2. Check clutch hydraulics are not faulty, causing insufficient clutch throwout travel,
  3. Check gearbox oil level is ok and of correct oil grade.

Definately check our transmission fluid level, check you owners manual for how to do this. Some manufacturers want you to check it warm, others when cold, others in park and some in nuetral! Also sounds like it could be your govenor valve, which senses engine speed to determine shift points. This uses a vacuum modulator (more vacuum and idle, slow speed = no shifting...no vacuum at high rpm = shifting). This may explain why you need to rev the engine a bit to get it to shift. You should also have a stuck spool valve. Best bet is to check your fluid level and if its fine bring it to your dealer to have it properly diagnosed.

Sounds like the friction surface of the clutch disc is slipping. You would have to install a new clutch (clutch disc, pressure plate, and clutch release bearing), and have the flywheel surface cut and polished back to perfect smooth by a shop.
Manual transmission gears don't slip like automatics. And lack of fluid in the transaxle or the hydraulic clutch system won't cause this either.

There isn't much difference between them. The SL series didn't change between 95 and 96 except for the ecm is OBD2 on the 96. Are both cars stick shift? The difference in the SL1 and the SL2 are the cams. 1 for sohc and 2 for dohc. So what you are asking is can I take out my dohc motor and install a sohc motor right?

My 1999 saturn sl1 will not shift into 2nd or reverse, but works ok for 1st and 3rd. what can the problem be?

manual transmission correct? 1,3,5 work by pulling on a cable attached to the transmission. 2,4,R work by pushing on a cable attached to the transmission. you have a shift cable problem. whatever is supposed to push the shifter cable is not working. it also could be a problem where the shift cable mounts to the levers on the transmission. do a good visual inspection of the cables where they attach to the transmission while somebody attempts to shift into 2 or 4.

Does a saturn sl1 2001 have a single or double transmission?

An SL1 has a single overhead camshaft, SOHC, engine. It has but one transmission. If it has a clutch pedal next to the brake pedal, it is a manual shift/transmission, if there is only a brake pedal, then it is an automatic transmission.
