Question about Honda Civic

1 Answer

My 98 honda civic lx (automatic) idles high around 2000rpm when the engine is cold and when is hot idle goes up and down. I recently changed distributor, distributor cap and rotor. No engine light. When a/c is running idle doesn't go up and down. Any idea what it could be? Thanks

With your a/c issue, the compressor might be faulty and not engaging and disengaging. have the a/c system level checked and recharged if necessary...if okay, then start to check the clutch in the compressor to see if it kicking it or not...maybe the low side or high side switch...as for your idle, it really didn't sound like a distributor,.....to me it sounds like you have a faulty, Idle Air Control Motor in the throttle body allowing in too little air, and when a/c is on, its just right...have them both checked,

How to adjust idle?

hot engine ?, cold or both,, EFI runs in 3 modes, cold ,warm and hot.

name it.

which engine option (displacement)??????

there is no idle adjust, that is the PCMs, job 100%, all the time.

Carbs are gone.

here is rule one for all EFI.

idle is the last thing to work correctly.

anything the causes a gross imbalance of engine power to engine load, under idle will cause , idle controls to fail.

low idling causes. (over 50 but, here ar basics)

1: AFR (air fuel mixture too lean) usually surges. (clogged or leaking injectors. or fuel pressure way to high)

2: air leaks, cause racing, so not that. (speed density car ,if is)

3: egr stuck open. low idle and misfire.

4: ISC stuck closed (IAC electric)

5: cam belt slipped, timing retarded, compression at 1/2 spec, and well, valve will bend soon....

6: CEL glowing running? can be in limphome, limp cancels Idle controls (in may cases) RTM read the FSM on DTCs.

if fails hot?, is hot = 180F temp or more? "thermometer time"

if not, the PCM goes , quite nuts.

1992 civic automatic idles okay when cold engine, but idle fluctuate 800 to 2500 RPM when engine hot

" Hunting" is usually indicative of a faulty temp sensor or air flow meter telling lies to your computer.
It can also be vacuum leaks, however these are usually apparent even when cold.
Male sure you don't have any air locks in your cooling system.

1997 Civic Lx idles rough and low especially with AC on

It's the extra load on your engine when AC compressor kicks on, and it draws engine rpm down. Your fuel injection system has what is called an "idle air control valve", that is supposed to overcome that and adjust idle up & down automatically as needed according to engine load conditions. I'd say it needs replacement, unfortunately it's a little more expensive than most & will run you about $165. Before you do, if you do, make sure all connections & any hoses running to it are in good shape no cracks, on tight & clean, as that can also cause part to malfunction.

Good idling speed

This all depends on when you are reading the rpms becaus ethe engine will run faster when you first start it to bring it up to operating temperature than it will drop down to about 700-800 when the engine is warm. i recommend letting your engine warm up, than read your tach and if it is still reading 1000 rpms than reduce it down to 700-800. your ECU will compensate for this when your engine is cold.

this could also be a possible bad Idle Air Control Valve because your engine speed should be regulated by the computer.
