Hello scottbrua: My name is Roger and I will give you some things to check. Providing their is no mechanical reason for the no crank such as a seized up motor. Check the battery for proper voltage. Should be at 12 to 12.5 volts. If less than this the engine would crank slow or just click. Make sure your connection at the battery cables are clean and tight. Check the cables for any corrosion in them. Usually when a cable has corrosion inside the housing you will see a swelling in the outer housing. Replace the cable if this is a problem. With a volt meter ground the negative lead to the battery (neg. post). Touch the positive lead to the positive terminal at the starter. You should have battery voltage equal to that of the battery. If not you need to look at the cable connections or battery as a source of the problem.Try turning the headlights on They shoulb have a bright light when on. If they are dim yellow you have a voltage problem or a connection problem. Remember the mechanical source of the problem. Turn the engine over by hand. This can be done by using a socket and ratchet at the end of the crankshaft.Usually in all the testing and checking you should find your problem. Should you need further help please kust ask. Please rate the answer. This way I know if it was helpful or not. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Check voltage at the big wire going to the starter, should have battery voltage 12 volts. If low or bad voltage reading check battery voltage at battery posts, should have 12.6 volts, if good reading replace battery cables if bad reading have battery tested. If good voltage at starter replace starter defective.

Need to check for clean and tight cables both at the starter and the battery, and have your battery tested

Sounds to me that your starter is gone. There is one thing you can do, try tapping ya starter and then try starting the car. If it starts then you have what is called a dead spot in ya starter. The only fix for this is a new starter. Make sure that you dont have a bad wire going to your starter also. Hope this helps.

Gow do I change or fix starter in 1997 chevy cavalier ?

You don't assume anything

You recall how old things are & then test
the easiest & most likely items

Battery
Cables
Starter Solenoid

IT JUST CLICKS, WHEN I TURN THE KEY, I HAVE CHANGED THE BATTERY STARTER AND SYLINOID. STILL JUST CLICKS AT THE STARTER, ENGINE IS FREE AND NOT BOUND.

Only thing that would click, is bad sylonoid, starter, or battery. But as you said, you changed all that is mentioned. Yes if engine is seized, like a rod barring, or main barring, then that's a whole nother issue. But assuming all you checked is good, then only other thing I can even tell you based on the click on starter, is there is a ground problem, try by passing, and arking on starter from positive to negative with rubber handed end pliers to see if you are getting spark, as well as if starter turns and how much. Let me know if I have helped , I wish I had more symptoms, like when this happened, what made you replace all, what was original sypmtom to have you place all items mentioned . Let me know, thanks mike

What was the starter doing before you changed it?What was the initial problem?See if the engine will turn manually by turning the crankshaft or flywheel.
