Question about Ford F-150

I have a 1994 Ford F-150 with a 5.8L engine. There is a unit on the right side of the motor (below the alternator) with a bad bearing. Can you identify it for me?

Alternator light is on 2003 Taurus also smoke coming from firewall on left side car is running rough

It is possible the belt is slipping causing tbe smoke. Alternator is not charging. It may be locked from bearing going bad so it doesnt turn. Hope this helps.

You said the alternator and belt. If both have to be replaced every time I would be looking for an alignment issue. Pop the hood and look down the side of the belts from the side of the truck. Do they look to be straight or is there a slight bend? Use a straight edge if necessary to get a good look. You may need to shim the alternator to get it straight.

If the belt is wearing out then it's probable that it is pulling harder on one side of the alternator pulley creating undue stress on the bushings (not bearings) inside the alternator. This would eventually cause them to wear uneven and throw everything inside out of line. Hope this helps.

Ammeter reads 18V with engine running.

I'm assuming you mean the charging voltage indicator. This is an indication of an incorrect charging voltage (too high, should be from 12.5 to 14 volts). This problem is most likely caused by a bad charging voltage regulator. There are two variations of the location of the regulator: 1) regulator is outside of the alternator and located on right side of the engine compartment on the wheel-well, below the starter relay or 2) The regulator is inside the alternator (in which case you'd have to replace the alternator).

Blower Removal

1. Discharge the refrigerant from AC system. (Refer to the operating instructions of

your refrigerant recovery recycling charging station for proper procedures.)

2. Disconnect the inlet and outlet pipe from the evaporator.


- When connecting and disconnecting, refer to Quick Coupling below

- Immediately plug all open fittings to keep moisture out of system.

3. Remove the cover and drain hose.

4. Remove the glove box and disconnect the wiring harness connector.

5. Remove the blower unit.

6. Install in the reverse order of removal.

7. Evacuate the refrigerant system. (Refer to the operating instructions of your

refrigerant recovered cycling charging station for proper procedures.)

S. Charge the AC system. (Refer to the operating instructions of your refrigerant

You dont need to take it off to get is checked. You can have it checked right on the vehicle. I would check it first before taking it all the way out, it might not be bad! You can go to any tool store and buy an alternator checker for like 3 dollars. This will tell you if your alt is putting out a charge. As for the location of your alternator it is usually on the upper right passenger side of the motor to the left of the waterpump if you are facing the vehicle. Should be two wires running to it.

ck your alternator if you have one large white wire and two smaller dark wires you've got an internal regulator the entire alternator needs to be replaced if bad

a simple voltmeter you can still buy at radio shack will tell you in about 30 seconds

set meter for dc volts 25 volt scale place red probe on battery positive and black probe on battery negative note reading on voltmeter (11 to 12 volts) start truck/car at idle reprobe battery same as before volts should come to about 12/13 have someone give a slight throttle to engine volts should come to 13.8 volts and stay there never going over this if any volt reading was not as described Yep your voltage regulator/alternator is bad

if the power steering pump is not circulating than you should check vac lines first..if thats not the prob. replace pump. as for the engine vibration could be as simple as a misfire..
