Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Please try to fill in the power steering fluid on the power steering reservoir. When filling please move the steering wheel to the left and right for the fluid to go down. This can help lighten the steering wheel. Please do check if you have power steering leakage too for this may be the cause of fluid loss.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Total loss of power steering on Ford EL futura.

The first thing to do is, isolate the problem. Crack the
the pressure line loose at the back of the power steering pump. If you can get at it, if not, jack it up put a stand under it and try to loosen it from the bottom.Or you can loosen the pressure line into the
rack.(or steering box as I don't know the year of the car) Snug up the line, and put on safty goggles.
Have somone get behind the wheel. Make sure the
ps fluid is full. Start the car and slowly loosen the line
a bit so the fluid shoots out have your helper turn
slightly to the right and back to center, then slightly
left and back to center. Each time the wheel is turned
the pressure should increase, if that happens, the
problem is in the rack.(or box) But if you have weak
pressure from the pump, the pump is bad.
Hope this helps. G,Day

Powwer steering out of control

It will probably just sit there when you start the engine, then take off like a rocket when you touch the steering wheel? The wheel will take off in the opposite direction of the way you tried to turn the steering wheel. (you start to turn the wheel to the left and it rips out of your hand and goes right until it slams the full right stop, then rockets back to the left until it hits the full left stop and shoots back to the right again and repeats this process until the engine is shut off.)
If this is the case, you have the hoses from the control valve to the power cylinder reversed.

Steering wheel squeeks. sounds like a rubber bushing squeek when turning wheel.

CHECK THE INNER TIE-RODS LOCATED BEHIND THE CENTER OF THE ENGINE. NEAR THE FIREWALL. THERE YOU WILL FIND THE TWO TIE-RODS CONNECTED BY A FIGURE 8 LOOKING DEVICE. WHILE AN ASSISTANT TURNS THE STEERING WHEEL, TAKE NOTE OF THE LOSS OF MOTION FOUND IN THE STEERING. BY REPLACING THIS INNER TIE-ROD ASSEMBLY, YOU WILL REGAIN THE LOSS OF MOTION IN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE FRONT TIRES WHICH MAY BE WEARING OUT ON THE INSIDES OF THE TREADS. HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANK YOU FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. GOOD LUCK

Loss of steering

Sounds like you broke a tie rod end, or a steering linkage connection.

Do you see anything that connects to the wheels hanging down?
Open the hood, and look at where the steering column shaft goes down. Can you see it turn? (this will take to people to see)
If that shaft turns, where it connects to the wheels, look at the tie rod (the long rod that connects to both front wheels), do you see it move?
