The only way they will tell you is if you have them fix it.. Do you have any check or service engine lights. Does car seem to run well?

Do you have aftermarket exhaust? Have you checked your O2 sensors and or your cat? Probably start with checking your O2 sensors cause those are semi easy to get to as well as fairly inexpensive. If those check out ok move on to replacing your cat. Now don't go using any of those universal parts as they may save you money now but could end up costing you A LOT more in the long haul.

This might be due to innefficient air - fuel combustion. One reason causing this is the piston displacement and poor compression ratio. Better yet have the engine tuned up and considering the age of the engine maybe this is the perfect time for it to be overhauled.

check the report on your smog test and go from there. If it passed then it should be working within the legal limits. If your MIL (check engine light) is not on, I think you are ok.

Need 92 toyota paseo to pass CA smog test ! What causes too high HC in smog test????

High HC means moisture in the system. Try driving it longer then take it to the smog shop. Otherwise it could be hard like a head gasket or easy such as a PCV not functioning. Any ways you should always drive it about 20 miles before smog check, longer when the weather is cold.

Once it runs all of the tests, its good to go. If you keep having that problem. someone is disconnecting the battery or resetting the computer or somehow the computer is losing memory. Have a shop check out why.

Failed Smog Test Close to CA-HC Limits

You can try some over the counter solutions per say. Some of the mechanics in a bottle. They sell some products This will probably be the cheapest router. If this doesn't work then you need repairs.
